Goreng wakes up in a stark, mysterious building where he learns from his cell-mate, Trimagasi, that they are on level 48 of a place called the Pit. Trimagasi explains the strange and brutal system of the prison and how it operates, stressing the importance of food within this grim environment.

An alarm signals the arrival of a massive table filled with partially eaten food, which descends through a hole into their cell. While Trimagasi greedily consumes the food, Goreng expresses disgust and tries to stave off hunger by pocketing an uneaten apple.

Goreng experiences increasing heat in the cell as a punishment for keeping the apple. Trimagasi instructs him that the food belongs to them only while it is on their floor and insists he must discard the apple to relieve the punishment.

Goreng reveals that he volunteered to enter the Pit for six months in exchange for an accredited diploma. As they discuss their pasts, Trimagasi opens up about his own crime and the reasons that led him to the Pit.

During their confinement, a dead body falls through the hole into their cell. Trimagasi nonchalantly explains the phenomenon, revealing the dark truths of survival in the Pit and the desperation of those who succumb to suicide.

A woman named Miharu arrives on the food platform while searching for her child. After a violent confrontation with inmates who attempt to assault her, Miharu demonstrates her fierce determination to descend further in search of her missing child.

Goreng wakes to find himself tied down, having been moved to level 171 with Trimagasi. The horror of their situation intensifies as they encounter inmates who have lost their will to live and the gruesome reality of their surroundings.

As hunger drives Trimagasi to extreme measures, he begins carving into Goreng's leg. The tension reaches a breaking point when Miharu arrives and intervenes, saving Goreng and allowing him to exact revenge on Trimagasi.

Goreng finds himself partnered with a new cell-mate named Imoguiri, who has been part of the administration that runs the Pit. She shares her insights about the structure of the Pit and the potential for cooperation among inmates.

Imoguiri urges the fellow inmates to only eat what they need, aiming to create solidarity down the levels. Despite her efforts, her pleas largely go unheard, with prisoners continuing their selfish ways.

After treating Miharu when she falls ill, the group is shocked when she kills Imoguiri's dog in a violent outburst. The event leads to an emotional breakdown for Imoguiri, further reflecting the brutality and despair of their environment.

After reassignment, Goreng is horrified to find himself at level 202 where he struggles to survive in solitude. As desperation mounts, he succumbs to cannibalism, devouring the remains of Imoguiri, driven by hallucinations of his former companions.

Goreng wakes up on level 6 with a new cell-mate, Baharat, who has aspirations of escaping the Pit. They plan a descent strategy to collect food and give it away to those below, offering hope of breaking the oppressive cycle.

As they descend through the levels, Goreng and Baharat aim to ensure a single, perfect dish is sent back up the platform as a message of their rebellion against the system. They choose a panna cotta, demonstrating their intention to conquer the oppressive structure.

Ultimately, Goreng and Baharat make a disturbing discovery at the last level—Miharu's child. After a hard-fought battle resulting in many losses, Goreng is left with the choice to send the child back to the administration as the true message of their struggle.
