The Platform 2

The ending of The Platform 2 reveals that, much like the first film, it’s a bleak commentary on human nature and social inequality, set within the experimental confines of the Pit. Perempuan, who initially believed in the law of solidarity, loses faith as she witnesses and endures brutal violence and corruption among the prisoners. Her personal guilt over her art’s tragic consequences and her desire to escape the hellish environment lead her to devise a plan to fake her death and escape during a gas attack. However, the system is always watching, and the administration manipulates her guilt by using a child—one of the kids playing on the pyramid of stairs—who is actually connected to her past and her lost partner’s son. It’s implied that Goreng, the protagonist from the original film, is her former partner’s son, making their bond more personal, even romantic. This connection underscores that the cycle of suffering is endless. When Perempuan and the child descend into the darkness at the bottom of the Pit, it symbolizes their rejection of the vicious cycle—perpetual brutality, inequality, and violence. Perempuan’s death, sacrificing herself to save the child, becomes her act of redemption, a final rejection of the corrupt system that constantly manipulates and destroys lives. The film ends on a somber note, highlighting that no matter how many prisoners attempt to challenge the system, the cycle of exploitation and despair persists, and escape remains an illusion. The ghosts in the darkness at the end, including Goreng’s and Trimagasi’s, reinforce that all those who entered the Pit did so seeking salvation or revenge, but are ultimately trapped in a never-ending cycle of suffering. The film’s social commentary is expressed not through a straightforward story but through overwhelming noise, symbolism, and a focus on the inescapable, brutal reality of human nature.
