The film closes on a quiet but powerful reconciliation between memory and the act of recording it. After months of piecing together fragmented testimonies, crafting a miniature version of their neighborhood, and reenacting scenes of the 1981 Bread Riots, Asmae finally persuades her grandmother to confront the very thing she has always avoided: the camera. The matriarch, who has spent decades shielding her family by refusing any visual testimony, tentatively lifts the lens, her eyes flickering between fear and a dawning sense of agency. She snaps a photograph of herself, once again a silent keeper of secrets, now becoming the subject of a remembered truth.

The camera then turns outward, capturing the whole family gathered around the tiny diorama, balloons bobbing amidst the model houses, and the grandmother standing at its edge, her gaze finally meeting the viewer. This final frame functions as both a literal family portrait and a visual metaphor for the restoration of a silenced past. By allowing herself to be seen, the grandmother symbolically breaks the spell of erasure that the state‑imposed “Years of Lead” had cast over countless personal histories. As the image widens, the diorama fades into the real household, merging the reconstructed memory with the present reality. In the last moments Asmae whispers that she will not tell her grandmother she made the film, a gentle promise to protect the fragile peace she has helped create while still honoring the truth she has uncovered. The ending leaves us with the sense that memory, once reclaimed and shared, can heal the fractures left by oppression, and that the act of looking—both through and into the camera—can become a quiet act of resistance.
