A young American volunteer, Sergeant Tom Cutler, is sent north from Montreal with a dispatch ordering Fort Williams to reinforce Crown Point. On the route to Crown Point he is killed by two men posing as British scouts, one of them an Ogane. The murder deprives the expedition of its orders and precipitates a crisis for the frontier garrison.

Without timely relief, Fort Williams falls to Montcalm's French forces, marking a decisive setback for the British garrison. The siege reveals the frontier's vulnerability and shifts momentum toward the French. The loss heightens the need for reinforcements.

Two years after Tom Cutler's murder, Nat 'Hawkeye' Cutler and Sagamore return home to investigate the killing and clear his name. Their search draws them back into the widening war on the frontier and foreshadows their future role in the conflict. The case seeds the complex loyalties that follow them.
