After Wyoming’s law and order have been reestablished by a group known as “The Frontiersman,” the town of Laramie is under the steady supervision of Sheriff Sam Barrett. Life appears peaceful until one evening at the local saloon, where a heated dispute over gambling suddenly turns violent. The altercation involves his adult son, Logan (played by Gordon MacRae), and a fiery rancher named Kearney (played by Edwin Rand). During the confrontation, Kearney gets wounded by a shot fired by Logan, escalating the tension. A nearby newspaper editor, Larrabee (portrayed by Rory Calhoun), intervenes and explains to Sheriff Barrett that Kearney had accused him of cheating at cards and drew a gun on him. Fortunately, Larrabee was unarmed, so Logan stepped in to prevent Kearney from firing. Recognizing the seriousness of the incident, Sheriff Barrett decides to arrest and detain both Logan and Kearney for a period of ten days.
However, Kearney is furious over what he perceives as unfair favoritism toward Logan. He loudly voices his discontent, claiming bias from the sheriff. After the prisoners are eventually released, a tense scene unfolds as Logan rides past Kearney’s ranch. Suddenly, gunfire erupts, and a mysterious rider, dressed in dark clothing, shoots and kills Kearney before quickly riding away. Logan dismounts to help, only to find that Kearney is already dead. Just then, Ryan, one of Kearney’s ranch hands (portrayed by John Doucette), arrives at the scene and immediately suspects Logan of being the assassin because he notices a man in similar attire riding off on a Pinto, a breed Logan is known to own.
Ryan reports his suspicion to Sheriff Barrett, who, believing Logan’s guilt, forms a posse to hunt him down. During his attempt to evade capture, Logan encounters Janie Martin (played by Julie London), the daughter of a local doctor, Dr. J.A. Martin (Raymond Bond). Logan explains his innocence, and Janie, moved by his story, secretly helps him escape. However, in a tragic twist, she later fires her rifle to signal the posse about Logan’s whereabouts, unintentionally leading to his recapture and second imprisonment.
While imprisoned, Larabee (another key character played by Rory Calhoun) visits Logan and secretly hands him a weapon. With this new tool, Logan manages a daring escape from jail. Meanwhile, a bank in Laramie is robbed, and its banker is shot by a man dressed similarly to Logan, riding away on the same Pinto as Logan. Janie, observing the incident, notices a man in similar attire and realizes that Logan has been truthful about his innocence all along. The evidence points to a more sinister plot involving wrongful accusations.
Eventually, Sheriff Barrett uncovers the truth: it is not Logan but his editor, Larabee, who has orchestrated the crimes, including the bank robbery and the murder of Kearney. The realization comes too late to prevent further chaos, but in a climactic scene, father and son, working together and fighting side by side, manage to put an end to the true culprit’s schemes. Ultimately, Logan is exonerated and cleared of all charges, and peace is restored to the town of Laramie, thanks to the bravery and perseverance of his father, Sheriff Barrett.
“Sometimes, things aren’t what they seem at first,” as the story reveals, emphasizing themes of justice, family loyalty, and truth prevailing over deception.
