Last of the Redmen

Set during the French and Indian War in 1757, the Munro family—Cora Munro Julie Bishop, Alice Munro Evelyn Ankers, and Davy Munro Robert “Buzz” Henry—travels from England to visit their father, Colonel Munro, who commands Fort William Henry in the American colonies. The British frontier is tense, and French strategy runs through every rumor: Montcalm’s forces and their Native allies are said to be moving from the south, aided by ruses that blur the lines between friend and foe. The chasing deception is orchestrated in part by General Webb [Frederick Worlock], the Fort Edward commander, who has been swayed by Magua Buster Crabbe, a cunning Iroquoian scout with a long memory and a venomous grudge. Magua, who was flogged by Colonel Munro for drunkenness years earlier, sees an opportunity to settle a score by targeting the Munro children and dragging their family into a brutal confrontation. The plan is simple in motive but brutal in method: lure the family into danger under the pretense of safety and then force a deadly trap.

Leading the Munros on this ominous trek are Major Heywood [Jon Hall] and a small British escort, who are convinced they are guiding a prudent route to safety. Yet Hawkeye [Michael O’Shea], a colonial scout renowned for his blunt honesty and rough, unpolished manner, and his loyal Iroquois companion Uncas [Rick Vallin] see through Magua’s deceit. Hawkeye’s presence, along with Uncas’s steadfast courage, marks the turning point of the expedition: they refuse to accept the misleading signals that have already claimed others. The moment Magua’s ambush unfolds, Hawkeye and Uncas step in to interrupt the trap, rescuing Major Heywood and the Munro children and proving that prudence and skill can outmaneuver treachery. When the fugitives finally stumble upon the garrison at Fort William Henry, they learn of a tense, morally ambiguous surrender. The fort staff announces an “honourable surrender” to the French and are permitted to keep their arms, though not their ammunition. Hawkeye, ever vigilant, senses that the Iroquois threat remains imminent and that true protection for the noncombatants will require more than a hollow banner of surrender. He shifts into defensive mode, organizing the fort’s limited resources and readying the defenders for a possible massacre, while seeking a safer corridor for the families and men who have already endured so much. The defense is not merely a stand; it is a calculated effort rooted in experience, hope, and a stubborn belief that human life can be preserved even as the war grinds on.

Across these events, the film threads a careful balance of loyalty, resilience, and moral ambiguity. The Munro children—Cora [Julie Bishop], Alice [Evelyn Ankers], and young Davy [Robert “Buzz” Henry]—move through danger with a measured courage that helps them endure the ordeals of a frontier war.
