At the start of the French and Indian War in 1754, the Mingo aligned with the French massacre the Mohican tribe that stood with the British. Pathfinder, [George Montgomery], and Chingachgook [Jay Silverheels] discover the lone survivor, Uncas [Edward Coch]. Angered that the British failed to protect their Mohican allies, Pathfinder gains entry to the British fort and confronts Colonel Duncannon [Walter Kingsford].

Colonel Duncannon enlists Pathfinder and Chingachgook to spy for the British by posing as French sympathisers. When Pathfinder notes they would not be able to uncover the French plans without speaking their language, the Colonel assigns Alison, a fluent French speaker, to join them. Alison, [Helena Carter], earns her place through decisive action, including killing a Mingo with a pistol and infiltrating French society once they reach the French fort.

Alison discovers that the French have built a mountain road to bring supplies to the main port, a highway that could be blown up with black powder to cut off the fort and starve its outposts of provisions. She had come to the North American colonies hoping to marry an English Captain who had fallen into disgrace through alcoholism, and now she encounters him anew as he has become a renegade, married to a Mingo princess, and holding a commission in the French army.

Pathfinder and Chingachgook learn that the French commander keeps all his defensive plans in his office, so they stage a distraction and slip inside. They find the plans, and Chingachgook slips out the window with them. But the English renegade takes aim at Pathfinder and accuses him and Alison of being spies, sentencing them to be shot at dawn.

At dawn, Pathfinder makes a daring escape from his cell while Chingachgook arrives with British soldiers, launching an attack on the fort that forces the French to surrender.
