On the train, John's anxiety grows as he suspects a pursuer may be nearby. He notices a figure in the corridor and hears a ticket inspector mention a point close to his house. In a panic, he triggers the emergency cord and jumps off the train toward home.

Despite his plan to confess, a radio broadcast claims the crash was caused by a failed signal, not the cord. The couple still heads to tell Clayton, who says he won’t make anything more of John's actions. The moment heightens doubt about the true cause of the disaster.

The next day Clayton returns with Inspector Waterson, revealing that Mrs. Wilding was shot before the crash. They suspect John killed her and jumped; John denies it, but the investigation intensifies, and a revolver is recovered from the garden pond that evening.

Fearing a hanging for a crime he did not commit, John visits the Wildings’ house in London to see if Mr. Wilding is alive. Mrs. Wilding’s mother tells him she identified her son’s body, suggesting that Wilding is indeed dead.

John travels to Plymouth to locate Susan’s husband, where he finds Mr. Wilding alive at a hotel. Wilding claims he was on the train, murdered his wife, and planted his identifying papers on a dead man. They fight, and Wilding shoots John in the head.

Back on the train and recovering from his panic, John does not pull the cord. He returns to Susan and voices his lingering doubts about their plan. Susan then pulls the cord and tells him to return to his wife.

John jumps from the train and arrives at his house, where he and his wife embrace. The dangerous pursuit seems to end for the moment as they recommit to their relationship, though the threat of scandal and pursuit lingers.

The couple hears a train whistle, suggesting the danger is not entirely past. It is revealed to be the distant whistle of the continuing train they had previously halted. The sound remains as a reminder of the earlier crisis.

The narrative closes with the sense that life goes on and the halted train is seen moving again in the distance. John and Carol face an uncertain future, with lingering doubts about truth and trust. The film leaves an unresolved tension between love, guilt, and fate.
