Train of Events (1949) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Train of Events (1949), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

A postwar, Liverpool-bound train leaves London’s Euston station as night falls and tension tightens around a seemingly ordinary journey. The mood is heavy with unspoken histories, and a single lantern flashing beside the tracks signals danger. A road tanker blocks a level crossing just as the train hurtles north, leaving the driver with no room to stop. Just as disaster seems certain, the scene cuts away to three days earlier, and the narrative unfolds through a quartet of sharp, interwoven flashbacks—the train of events that makes up the film’s title and its quiet meditation on memory, guilt, and consequence.

The Actor begins with Philip Mason, a man carrying a dark secret. He learns of his estranged wife’s infidelity during his army years, and her sneering, victorious memory of that past wounds him. On the train, the party is heading toward Canada, and a grim, macabre burden accompanies them: a theatre hamper that conceals his wife’s body. He longs to dispose of the secret once they cross the Atlantic, but detectives have already boarded the carriage, closing in as the tension between past and present threatens to erupt into violence. The scene is set to the haunting counterpoint of a gramophone playing These Foolish Things, underscoring how memory and desire can be both intimate and dangerous.

The Prisoner-of-War shifts the focus to Richard and Ella. Richard is a prisoner of war on the run who refuses to return to Germany, while Ella dreams of a fresh start abroad. Their shared history has left them living in a string of shabby lodgings as they chase a new life. Ella has secretly taken money from their landlady to fund their escape, and a grim arithmetic unfolds: there is only enough money for one of them to emigrate. In a selfless act, Ella resolves that Richard should be the one to go, even as the cost to their fragile bond becomes painfully clear.

The Composer centers on Raymond Hillary, a celebrated composer traveling to a performance with his star pianist, the temperamental Irina, along with a cadre of musicians. Although married, Raymond has a history of dalliances, and Irina is the latest in a line of complications. The journey is as much about creative ambition and the pressures of artistry as it is about romance, with the tension between personal temptation and professional duty shaping the mood of the trip and foreshadowing the emotional derailments to come.

The Engine Driver follows Jim Hardcastle, a locomotive driver at a turning point in his career. He is a candidate for a management post at the locomotive sheds, a role that would lift him off the footplate and into office hours—the dream his wife, [Emily], hopes for. Yet a crisis arises when Jim covers for his daughter’s future husband, who was knocked unconscious while Jim and a colleague attempted to stop him from resigning. The plan is delicate: the young man is placed in a fish wagon to recover, a ruse that backfires as a connected locomotive heads toward Macclesfield, threatening to expose the ruse and jeopardize Jim’s prospects. The consequences ripple through the night as Jim grapples with loyalty, duty, and the possibility of a new life off the rails.

Back on the night train, the same lights by the track shimmer and the tanker lingers close, and fate closes in on several passengers in different ways. Richard’s grief, Ella’s sacrifice, Irina’s artistry, and Philip’s fear all collide with Jim’s stubborn practicality. When the wreck finally unfolds, the passengers confront the tangible costs of their choices: some survive, some are injured, and others vanish into memory as the wreckage becomes a brutal punctuation mark to their intertwined fates.

In the film’s closing moment, Jim returns to his wife, a quiet validation of his dream to move into a steadier life, even as the film leaves viewers contemplating how swiftly chance, choice, and circumstance can redirect a single night into many possible futures. The narrative’s mosaic of personal crises—secret sins, moral compromises, artistic vanity, and familial loyalty—unfolds with a restrained, observational tone that emphasizes character over spectacle, inviting the audience to reflect on how ordinary lives are threaded together by extraordinary moments.
