On a cold Christmas night, a man runs through a forest carrying something, and a nearly deserted train pulls into a quiet station. Two conductors step out to stretch and pass the time, while only a handful of passengers board as the train prepares to depart. The mysterious man, unable to speak, is allowed aboard, and soon he shares a car with a small group of travelers: a weary, inebriated salesman named Pete, Steve Zahn and a few others. Pete offers the man a drink, the man swallows a mouthful of pills with vodka, and not long after, he dies from a lethal mix of Seconal and alcohol. The moment is jarring, the quiet train suddenly thick with tension, and the atmosphere growing steadily more tense as a hidden secret seems to cling to the car.
Pete and the medical student Chloe, Leelee Sobieski, discover the dead man’s box and a striking object tucked inside the corpse’s cargo. When they show the box to Miles, the head conductor, Danny Glover he initially intends to report everything at the next stop, but curiosity wins him over. Pete, Chloe, and Miles—three survivors of this single, ill-fated journey—peel back the lid and glimpse something that promises a liberating fortune, a temptation powerful enough to cloud their judgment. The trio’s first instinct is to keep the mystery hidden, but their greed proves stronger, and the plan to safeguard the box rapidly becomes a scheme to keep it—and its rumored wealth—for themselves.
With Chloe taking the lead, the trio begins a precarious and increasingly paranoid game: they must dispose of the body, dodge suspicion from the other passengers, outwit the remaining conductor, and constantly monitor one another as the object’s pull gnaws at their resolve. The box seems to exert a palpable influence, twisting every choice into a potential betrayal and turning ordinary fear into a voracious appetite for more. The tension escalates as trust dissolves and suspicion spreads like a fever, each member fearing the others’ next move more than any external threat.
As the mystery deepens, it becomes clear that the box houses a supernatural force. Anyone who looks inside is shown the thing they would most desire, but the revelation comes at a terrible cost: corruption and a premature death before dawn. The box’s lure proves irresistible to all but Miles, whose attempts to safeguard the train and himself are undermined by the others’ desperation and the device’s sinister charisma. In a final, tragic flare, Miles dies just after glimpsing a last, grim possibility—placing the box in the path of an oncoming train, only to have it nudged off the tracks by a curious dog as the dawn nears.
And then, in a stark turn that seems almost grotesquely hopeful, a random toddler, wandering alone miles from civilization, picks up the box and peers inside, a simple smile creeping across a face untouched by the night’s corruption. The scene leaves a haunting sense of ambiguity: innocence confronted with temptation, and a world where danger can hide in the quietest places, waiting for the most unexpected moment to reveal itself.
