In the rolling plains of 1960s rural Spain, a solitary cortijo dominates the landscape, its stone walls and endless fields a reminder of a lingering feudal order. The estate belongs to an absent marchioness, while the land is tended by tenant farmers who live under the watchful eyes of a distant aristocracy, a rigid bureaucracy, and an often‑present Church. The atmosphere is thick with the weight of hierarchy; every routine—work, prayer, and silence—feels measured by rank rather than humanity, creating a claustrophobic world where the past refuses to give way to progress.

At the heart of this environment are Paco and Régula, a couple whose lives revolve around surviving the demands of their landlord and caring for their three children. Their eldest daughter, Nieves, labors as a maid in the big house, while their son, Quirce, is drawn into military service, each yearning for a life beyond the estate’s confines. Their youngest, Charito, is severely handicapped and confined to a crib, a constant reminder of the family’s vulnerability. Adding another layer of fragility is Azarías, Régula’s mentally impaired brother, whose quiet fascination with birds offers him a fragile sense of purpose amid the relentless monotony of the cortijo.

The estate’s social ladder stretches from the aristocratic heir, Señorito Iván, whose occasional visits bring a volatile mix of authority and pretension, down through the weary middle‑class manager Pedro and his bored wife Pura, to the laborers who are treated as little more than modern‑day serfs.
