What Happens in War: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of War (2020) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

In New Delhi, Major Kabir Dhaliwal is assigned to assassinate an Iraqi terrorist named Farid Haqqani, but the mission takes a brutal turn when he instead kills veteran RAW agent V. K. Naidu and proclaims himself rogue. In the wake of this escalation, Defence Minister Sherna Patel and Colonel Sunil Luthra mobilize Kabir’s former student, Captain Khalid Rahmani, to track down and eliminate the threat he now represents. The film then unfolds through a tense and layered narrative that shifts between flashbacks and present danger, weaving together loyalty, betrayal, and the pressures of command.

A troubled past shapes the present as Khalid yearns to join Kabir’s elite squad, yet faces an initial rejection because of his father Major Abdul Rahmani’s past betrayal during a prior mission. That betrayal left Kabir with two gunshot wounds and his partner dead, casting a long shadow over Khalid’s ambitions. After persuasive intervention from Luthra, Kabir agrees to reconsider Khalid, albeit with visible caution. The squad eventually comes to include Saurabh, Prateek, Muthu, and Aditi, and the team sets out on a high-stakes operation in Tikrit, Iraq, aimed at dismantling Haqqani’s network and arresting Basheer Hassib. Their efforts produce a win in the field as Basheer is captured and Rizwan Ilyasi, a terrorist who has reinvented himself as a businessman, is forced out of hiding.

Beneath the surface, trust is tested as Kabir notices that Khalid’s right-side targets are often missed and his peripheral vision is imperfect. This becomes a critical moment of tension: Kabir threatens Khalid with removal, while Khalid reveals that his partial eyesight stems from childhood bullying related to his father’s betrayal. Yet, recognizing Khalid’s devotion to his mother and his country, Kabir softens, grants him another chance, and Khalid is reinstated. Their uneasy alliance grows as the mission in Marrakesh progresses; Ilyasi hints at a mole within Kabir’s team, and the revelation arrives when Saurabh uncovers himself as the traitor. Prateek and Muthu are killed in the ensuing gunfight, and Kabir is wounded in the neck but survives and awakens in a hospital. A few days later, an injured Khalid returns with the news that he killed Saurabh, cementing the rift and the bond in equal measure.

The present-day pursuit escalates to a dangerous brinkmanship, with Khalid nearly removed from duty when Lt. Col. Jimmy Shroff is brutally killed by Kabir. Kabir’s next target, Dr. Uptal Biswas in Lisbon, becomes a proving ground for the evolving dynamic between the two men. Khalid’s efforts to prevent Kabir’s lethal plan fail, leading to his suspension and a deeper chase for the truth. As Khalid traces back through a series of missions, he learns of a covert operation from six months earlier—a mission to recover a government hard drive containing secret codes and to neutralize Ilyasi’s known associates. He also uncovers Kabir’s fabrication of a relationship with a dancer, Naina Sahni, in Italy, a ruse designed to spy on a key contact, Firoze Contractor, Ilyasi’s manager. Naina agrees to act as Kabir’s covert asset only if her daughter Ruhi is cared for; tragically, she is killed by Firoze, whom Kabir identifies as Ilyasi in disguise after plastic surgery. Kabir has since played a double game to root out moles and agents, including the killings of Naidu, Shroff, and Biswas, a strategy kept secret even from Aditi.

Alliances evolve under pressure as a deadly dual-chess match unfolds: Kabir and Khalid decide to join forces, but danger follows them to Kerala, where they attend Aditi’s wedding and recover a secret drive containing the nuclear codes. Aditi warns that the codes unlock missiles aimed at the Brahma satellite, a critical line of communication for coordinating India’s border defenses, and that Ilyasi intends to destroy the satellite to sever that link, enabling a catastrophic crossing of militants into Indian territory. Kabir hands the drive to Khalid for safekeeping, intensifying the personal stakes of every decision.

The plot twists into a shocking revelation, as Khalid contaminates Kabir’s drink with TTX, exposing his true identity as Saurabh, a betrayal that rewrites the entire narrative. A flashback to Marrakesh reveals how Ilyasi and Saurabh conspired to swap identities, with plastic surgery and altered vocal cords creating Khalid’s “injured” appearance. When the ruse is exposed, Saurabh reveals his plan in brutal fashion, and Ilyasi, armed with new confidence, abandons Khalid’s trust and ships him away with a fatal contradiction at the center of the conspiracy.

In the Arctic, the final confrontation peaks. Saurabh returns to Ilyasi aboard an icebreaker, and Kabir parachutes onto the ship to kill Ilyasi’s men and confront his betrayer. Kabir shows that he has seen through Saurabh’s disguise, identifying key differences—the accuracy of his aim on the right side and the presence of alcohol in his system, while Khalid had refrained for religious reasons. Aditi’s antidote becomes crucial, providing Kabir a counter to the poisoning while a GPS tracker allows Saurabh to monitor Kabir’s movements. The plan to destroy the Brahma satellite appears to be close to execution, but Kabir reveals the new coordinates have shifted, steering away from the satellite. The final cat-and-mouse moment sees Ilyasi killed by Saurabh, who then escapes, leading to an intense car chase and a climactic fall: Kabir ultimately disposes of Saurabh by having him crushed under a collapsing church dome, delivering a stark denunciation of treachery and a quiet lament that a traitor should not share a martyr’s fate.

In the wake of the battles, the truth of sacrifice and duty settles in. Khalid is posthumously honored for his courage, while his mother Nafeesa accepts the award on his behalf. Kabir meets with Luthra, who acknowledges the complexities of a system where many players carry a price. The film closes with a glimmer of personal reconciliation and hope: Kabir and Ruhi share a moment of connection while surfing at Bondi Beach in Sydney, a wish fulfilled for Naina. Yet Luthra’s parting call to complete the mission against Haqqani leaves Kabir with a reminder that the fight is not finished, and the next encounter with danger could be just around the corner.

War Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about War (2020): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Major Kabir kill RAW agent V.K. Naidu instead of terrorist Farid Haqqani?

Kabir kills Naidu to go rogue deliberately. This is part of his covert operation to root out moles within the intelligence agency. By appearing to betray his own side, Kabir intends to draw out the traitors operating within India's RAW network. The real target was never Haqqani, it was the internal threat that had been leaking information to terrorists like Rizwan Ilyasi.

Foreshadowing: Naidu's killing triggers the entire cat-and-mouse chase between Kabir and Khalid, establishing the film's central premise.

  • kabir dhaliwal
  • v k naidu
  • raw agent
  • betrayal
  • rogue mission
Q2

How does Khalid turn out to be Saurabh in disguise?

Khalid is revealed to actually be Saurabh, the mole from Kabir's team. In Marrakesh, Saurabh conspired with terrorist Rizwan Ilyasi to swap identities. Through plastic surgery and altered vocal cords, Saurabh assumed Khalid's appearance and voice. The 'injury' that caused Khalid's partial eyesight was fabricated to explain away differences in his shooting ability.

Foreshadowing: Kabir notices early on that Khalid misses right-side targets, which later becomes crucial evidence exposing the imposter.

  • khalid rahmani
  • saurabh
  • identity swap
  • plastic surgery
  • double identity
Q3

Why was Firoze Contractor actually Rizwan Ilyasi in disguise?

Rizwan Ilyasi伪装成Firoze Contractor, a businessman, to operate undetected in India. Kabir discovered this during his covert operation six months earlier when he faked a relationship with dancer Naina Sahni to get close to Ilyasi through Firoze. After plastic surgery, Ilyasi assumed Firoze's identity to build a legitimate business cover while coordinating terrorist activities behind the scenes.

Foreshadowing: The operation in Italy establishes that Ilyasi uses disguise and deception as primary weapons.

  • rizwan ilyasi
  • firoze contractor
  • disguise
  • plastic surgery
  • terrorist network
Q4

What was the Brahma satellite and why did Ilyasi want to destroy it?

The hard drive Kabir recovered contained nuclear codes that unlock missiles aimed at the Brahma satellite. This satellite is critical for coordinating India's border defenses, particularly along the Kashmir frontier. Ilyasi's plan was to destroy Brahma, severing military communications and creating a window for militants to cross into Indian territory undetected.

Foreshadowing: The stakes escalate significantly when Aditi explains the satellite's importance during the Kerala wedding.

  • brahma satellite
  • nuclear codes
  • border defense
  • kashmir
  • missile threat
Q5

What was Kabir's real mission while being rogue?

Kabir was secretly operating to eliminate moles and traitors within India's intelligence apparatus. His apparent betrayal, killing Naidu and going rogue, was a calculated strategy to expose the network working with Ilyasi. Only Aditi knew the truth. Kabir systematically eliminated compromised agents including Naidu, Lt. Col. Jimmy Shroff, and Dr. Uptal Biswas, while playing a double game to protect the mission.

Foreshadowing: The phrase 'everyone has a price' that Luthra mentions foreshadows the systemic corruption Kabir was fighting.

  • kabir rogue
  • covert operation
  • moles
  • raw
  • intelligence
Q6

Why does Khalid have imperfect vision in one eye?

Khalid's partial eyesight stems from childhood trauma. He was bullied as a child because of his father Major Abdul Rahman's betrayal, and the stress and isolation affected his peripheral vision in one eye. This detail becomes significant when Kabir notices that 'Khalid' consistently misses right-side targets, which later helps expose that he is actually Saurabh in disguise.

Foreshadowing: Kabir's observation about the shooting pattern is the key clue that unravels the identity deception.

  • khalid vision
  • eye problem
  • childhood bullying
  • father betrayal
  • shooting accuracy
Q7

Why did Saurabh become a mole and work with Ilyasi?

Saurabh's motivation appears to be financial gain and possibly ideological alignment with Ilyasi's cause. As the mole within Kabir's team, he passed intelligence to Ilyasi, enabling terrorist operations. His partnership with Ilyasi extended to the elaborate identity swap scheme, suggesting significant payoff or coercion was involved, though the film doesn't explicitly detail his exact motives.

Foreshadowing: Ilyasi's hint about a mole in Marrakesh sets up Saurabh's eventual unmasking.

  • saurabh mole
  • traitor
  • ilyasi
  • betrayal
  • intelligence leak
Q8

What happens to Naina Sahni in the Italy operation?

Naina Sahni was a dancer in Italy whom Kabir recruited as a covert asset to get close to Ilyasi's manager Firoze Contractor. She agreed to help on the condition that her daughter Ruhi would be cared for. Firoze, who is actually Ilyasi in disguise, killed Naina when her usefulness ended. Kabir discovered Firoze's true identity after Naina's death, which became a driving force in his mission.

Foreshadowing: Naina's sacrifice connects to the emotional resolution at Bondi Beach where Kabir cares for Ruhi.

  • naina sahni
  • ruhi
  • firoze contractor
  • killed
  • Italy operation
Q9

What happens on the houseboat when Khalid poisons Kabir?

During a celebration on a houseboat, Khalid (actually Saurabh) poisons Kabir's drink with TTX (tetrodotoxin). This reveals Khalid's true identity as Saurabh. The poisoning is part of the conspiracy with Ilyasi to eliminate Kabir and complete their plan to destroy the Brahma satellite. Kabir survives thanks to an antidote provided by Aditi.

Foreshadowing: The houseboat scene is the climax of the deception plot, revealing the identity swap that was orchestrated in Marrakesh.

  • houseboat
  • poison
  • tt x
  • sa urabh
  • khalid reveal
Q10

How does Saurabh die in the Arctic church?

Kabir pursues Saurabh to a derelict church in the Arctic region. During the confrontation, the church dome collapses and crushes Saurabh to death. Kabir deliberately uses this method to dispose of the traitor, delivering a stark denunciation of betrayal while noting that a traitor should not share a martyr's fate.

Foreshadowing: This violent end mirrors the film's theme that betrayal carries ultimate consequences.

  • saurabh death
  • arctic church
  • dome collapse
  • betrayal
  • final confrontation
Q11

What does the ending at Bondi Beach signify?

The ending shows Kabir surfing at Bondi Beach in Sydney with Ruhi, Naina's daughter. This fulfills Naina's final wish that her daughter would get to surf in Australia. The moment represents personal reconciliation and hope after the loss and betrayal Kabir experienced. However, Luthra's call reminding Kabir that the mission against terrorist Farid Haqqani remains unfinished suggests his fight is not over.

Foreshadowing: Naina's death in Italy directly leads to Kabir's promise to care for Ruhi.

  • bondi beach
  • ruhi
  • surfing
  • ending
  • naina wish
Q12

Why does Kabir give the secret drive containing nuclear codes to Khalid?

Kabir entrusts the drive to Khalid (who he still believes is genuine at that point) for safekeeping during the Kerala wedding. This decision places the nuclear codes in extreme danger, as it later allows Saurabh to use the drive against Kabir. The trust Kabir places in Khalid reflects his willingness to believe in redemption, despite the shadow cast by Khalid's father's betrayal.

Foreshadowing: This decision creates the critical vulnerability that Saurabh exploits during the houseboat poisoning.

  • nuclear codes
  • secret drive
  • khalid
  • trust
  • kerala wedding
