Ill Met by Moonlight (1957) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Ill Met by Moonlight (1957), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

During World War II, the Nazi-occupied Greek island of Crete becomes the backdrop for a bold, carefully planned operation. Major Patrick Leigh Fermor [Dirk Bogarde] and Captain Bill Stanley Moss [David Oxley], two British SOE officers, join forces with local Crete resistance to seize the German commander on the island, General Kreipe [Marius Goring], and secretly spirit him away.

Disguised as they navigate a line of German checkpoints, the group drives Kreipe’s car through the checkpoints, then abandons it and presses on on foot, moving mostly by night through rough, mountainous terrain. Their trek weaves through shadowy passes where they must stay ahead of alert German patrols, leaning on the courage and cooperation of townspeople and partisans who provide safe passage, food, and critical intelligence at just the right moments.

Kreipe, at times compliant, remains a complicated presence. He leaves personal tokens at several stops as breadcrumbs for his pursuers and even pretends a shoulder injury to slow the group’s progress, testing the British resolve and the resolve of their Cretan allies. The dynamic within the group tilts between suspicion and mutual purpose, with Kreipe’s maneuvers adding a layer of psychological tension to the physical strain of the journey.

The mission reaches a pivotal moment near a secluded cove on the island, where a Royal Navy pickup is anticipated. Kreipe attempts to secure leverage over a young boy named Niko [Dimitri Andreas], offering a gold coin and the promise of German jackboots if the boy goes to the beach. The British observers weigh the risk: is this a genuine show of bribery, or a trap? The scene unfolds with the boy seeming to be drawn toward the German camp, a possible ruse that tests the group’s trust and the locals’ loyalty as the German forces appear to close in.

Despite the tension, the party—now joined by local partisans—reaches the beach and awaits extraction. On board the awaiting vessel, Fermor and Moss return the coin and the other planted items Kreipe used to sow confusion, drawing a parallel to the story of Hansel and Gretel and the “breadcrumbs” left behind. The exchange underscores the mission’s flaws and strengths, the ingenuity of the operation, and the resolve of those who risked everything to achieve it.

As the scene shifts to the deck of the ship, Kreipe commends the professionalism and discipline of the group, recognizing the audacity and precision of a mission that balanced danger with daring. The farewell moment is punctuated by a small, poignant note: Niko sings “Filedem” while polishing his new German jackboots, a child’s gleeful reflection of a journey that began in fear and ended in a rare, hard-won sense of achievement.
