The movie opens on December 8, 1941, a pivotal day marked by the surprise Japanese attack on the Philippines. The story follows James MacArthur as Dave McVey Jr., the son of a wealthy American businessman heavily invested in the region. During the chaos of the invasion, Dave encounters Careo, played by Leopoldo Salcedo, a brave Filipino patriot leading a group of anti-Japanese guerrillas. Careo swiftly rescues Dave from a band of murderous bandits and hides him with an elderly Filipino and his granddaughter, who patiently teach Dave Tagalog to help him survive and integrate into the local resistance efforts.

Soon, Careo returns with troubling news—Dave’s father has evacuated the Philippines, leaving him in uncertain circumstances. As Dave struggles with his new reality, he is joined by Joe Trent, a rugged merchant sailor portrayed by Van Heflin. Joe, a seasoned third mate on a cargo ship sunk by the Japanese, is convinced that Dave’s father will reward him for protecting the young man. Despite his rough exterior, Joe’s motives are complicated, and his actions take a darker turn.

During their escape, Joe’s actions force Dave into a desperate situation when Joe attempts to assault the teenage granddaughter of the family that aided them. Her screams force Dave into a heartbreaking decision: he must flee alongside Joe, leaving the girl behind. Their journey leads them to meet Sisa, an English-speaking Filipino woman played by Rita Moreno, and a fiercely determined Filipino fighter named Atong, portrayed by Oscar Roncal. The group is united under the leadership of Colonel Ryker, an American officer overseeing guerrilla operations against the Japanese, played by Sidney Clute.

Colonel Ryker informs Dave that the Japanese might offer him a comfortable existence or even facilitate his return to the United States, considering his father’s extensive business ties with Japan before the war. However, Dave opts to stand with the Filipino guerrillas, choosing to resist the occupation and fight for his homeland. Together, they join Ryker’s guerrilla unit in their covert battles against the Japanese forces occupying the Philippines.

Joe, rising in rank, is promoted to lieutenant and is tasked with leading a daring raid against a Japanese-controlled sugar refinery and railway — strategic targets crucial for the Japanese supply lines. Accompanying him are Atong, Sisa, and other members of their guerrilla group. During the dangerous mission, tragedy strikes when the Filipino captain leading the operation is killed, and Atong kills one of his own men over the captain’s pistol, which Joe then forces Dave to accept for his safety.

As they proceed with their plans, Joe’s true nature emerges when he suggests abandoning their mission and sends Dave and Sisa into a nearby village to seek food. While they are negotiating with villagers, Joe’s men betray their principles by massacring the villagers to steal rice, a brutal act that underscores the grim realities of war. In the chaos of the raid, Joe shoots Atong, further revealing his ruthless side. Sisa, faced with the violence and brutality around her, rapidly shifts her allegiance, ultimately siding with Joe for survival.

Throughout the film, themes of resilience, sacrifice, and moral ambiguity are explored as characters grapple with the brutal realities of war, loyalty, and survival. The story paints a vivid picture of Filipino resistance during World War II, highlighting moments of courage and betrayal amidst the chaos of wartime occupation. The characters’ journeys, particularly that of Dave as he transitions from a sheltered young man into a fierce and committed fighter, are central to the narrative, underscoring the complex human emotions and moral challenges faced in times of conflict.
