The Grudge

In 2004, Fiona Landers becomes increasingly disturbed by inexplicable phenomena while working as a live-in nurse in a Tokyo house. Her frustration leads her to confide in her co-worker Yoko, convincing her that she must return to America to escape the haunting.

Upon her return to Pennsylvania, Fiona is reunited with her husband Sam and their daughter Melinda. However, her joy is overshadowed by horrifying visions of the spirits Kayako and Toshio, the entities that haunt her.

Haunted by the curse, Fiona succumbs to madness and brutally murders her husband and daughter. Overwhelmed by her actions, she ultimately takes her own life, sealing the curse's nature in the home.

Following the gruesome murders, Detectives Goodman and Wilson are called to investigate the scene. Goodman is so unsettled by the house's aura that he refuses to enter, while Wilson's experience there begins his spiral into madness.

Post-investigation, Wilson is haunted by Fiona's ghost, leading him to attempt suicide out of despair. Surviving with a disfigured face, he ends up in a psychiatric institution while Goodman resigns from the case, feeling the weight of the home's curse.

Later, real estate agents Peter and Nina Spencer learn their unborn child is at risk for a rare disorder. As Peter inspects the haunted home, he encounters Melinda's ghost bleeding, mistaking her for a lost girl, leading him down a dark path.

Peter becomes plagued by apparitions of Fiona and Melinda, leading to a complete psychological breakdown. In a tragic turn of events, Peter kills Nina and their unborn child before taking his life in the bathtub, further perpetuating the curse.

In 2005, the elderly couple Faith and William Matheson move into the haunted house. Faith, battling memory loss due to dementia, begins to see Melinda, and her mental state deteriorates significantly as the curse takes hold.

Faith brings in Lorna, an assisted suicide consultant, to help her manage her illness. Despite Lorna's advice to leave the house, William reveals his understanding of the ghosts, hinting at a deeper connection to the curse.

Lorna returns to find Faith has turned murderous, killing William and mutilating herself. In her frantic escape, Lorna encounters Sam's ghost, causing a fatal crash that adds another layer to the house's dark legacy.

By 2006, rookie detective Muldoon arrives in town with her son after her husband's death from cancer. She is drawn into the investigation of Lorna's body found in the woods, further unveiling the horrors tied to 44 Reyburn Drive.

Muldoon confronts Goodman about the cursed house after sensing his distress. Goodman reveals chilling details of the curse's origins, suggesting that it began in Japan with Fiona's arrival in America.

Haunted by the Landers’ spirits, Muldoon discovers Faith, who has been hospitalized following her jump from a balcony. The torment from the ghosts intensifies as Muldoon races against time to protect her family from the impending threat.

In a desperate bid to end the curse, Muldoon decides to burn 44 Reyburn Drive to the ground. As the flames engulf the house, she experiences visions of the ghosts, seemingly liberating them from their suffering.

After the flames extinguish, Muldoon embraces her son Burke in relief. In a shocking twist, she grabs Melinda instead before Fiona's ghost drags her into the unknown, leaving the curse unresolved as the credits roll.
