The House at the End of Time (2013) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of The House at the End of Time (2013), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

In 1981, Dulce Ruddy Rodriguez lives in an old house with her husband Juan José Gonzalo Cubero and their sons, Leopoldo Rosmel Bustamante and Rodrigo Hector Mercado. As strange, unsettling phenomena ripple through the home, the family is suddenly attacked. Dulce, bloodied on her face, regains consciousness and hurries downstairs to shield her kin. In the cellar she discovers Juan José stabbed to death, while Leopoldo vanishes—pulled through a doorway as if by a ghostly force.

After the murder, Dulce’s prints appear on the weapon, and she is arrested and imprisoned. Thirty years pass, and a now-elderly Dulce is released, but only on the condition that she serves the rest of her sentence under house arrest in the same house where the crimes unfolded. Once settled, she is visited by a local priest, Guillermo García Guillermo García, who seeks to restore her faith and believes in her innocence. She agrees to work with him to uncover the truth.

Together they dig into the house’s history. They learn that an English Freemason built the residence a century earlier and then vanished, a pattern echoed by later disappearances in town. Dulce insists the house is haunted—she sees an elderly man scrawl a sequence of elevens on her mirror—yet the police dismiss her claims as madness. The priest intervenes just in time to stop Dulce from harming herself and, armed with the house’s troubling history, believes they may still save Leopoldo.

In 1981, Leopoldo and Rodrigo play with local children, and Rodrigo develops a crush on a girl. Leopoldo conceives a secret handshake with his best friend, and when an intruder in the house seems to vanish, Dulce grows anxious. Leopoldo hands her a note he says comes from a ghost; the note warns Dulce to keep her children apart for a few days and accuses Juan José of attempting to murder Leopoldo in the future. Juan José dismisses the note but allows the children to play. During a baseball game, Leopoldo’s actions trigger a freak accident that kills Rodrigo.

Seeking answers, Dulce consults a local medium, who channels a future conversation in which Juan José refuses to recognize Leopoldo as his son and attempts to kill him. This revelation drives Dulce to demand a divorce, and Juan José responds with threats if she tries to take the children away. After Rodrigo’s death, he finds evidence that Leopoldo is not his biological son, and in a furious confrontation, he assaults Dulce and Leopoldo.

In 2011, as the clock strikes 11:11 and 11 seconds on November 11, Dulce realizes the house has transported her back thirty years to just before Rodrigo’s death. She bangs on doors, disturbing her family, and realizes she herself is the source of the disturbances. She writes a note for Leopoldo explaining the future and instructs him to pass it to her 1981 self without reading it. A version of Leopoldo from after Rodrigo’s death also travels back to the same day and reunites with his brother.

Dulce’s journey leads her to a meeting with an elderly man who reveals himself as Leopoldo from 2071. He explains that the house can shuttle people through time at random and that she must kill Juan José and abduct his 1981 self, who carries a latent disease curable only by 1981 medicine. Although the idea of altering time and risking the collapse of her own memory and family is daunting, Dulce accepts this difficult course as the only path to set things right. In a final twist, the 2011 priest is revealed as Leopoldo’s closest friend, performing their secret handshake, and he assists in guiding Leopoldo out of the house, claiming he is one of their local orphans. The closing moment introduces Leopoldo to Rodrigo’s crush, now grown into a woman, closing a circle of time, family, and haunting secrets.
