Zack lives on a remote farm in Tellico Plains, Tennessee, in a world where every day carries its own small risk. His mother Frances Barbara May does her best to keep the peace, while his younger sister Alice and his stern, devout stepfather Nathan Crane Dominic Raacke pull the household in different directions. Zack’s stepbrother Cyrus adds a sharpened edge to the family dynamics, and the tension between duty, faith, and survival quietly threads through the morning chores and the long, quiet evenings. One fateful night, Frances leaves the house during Nathan’s slumber and engages in a reckless private moment with Mike, a farm-hand who makes his home in a nearby shack. The incident foreshadows a disruption that will reach far beyond the Crane family.

The next morning, a massive meteorite crashes onto the property, casting an eerie, otherworldly glow across the fields. Dr. Alan Forbes, a nearby physician, visits the crash site to inspect the strange object—a large, hard-shelled sphere from which a poisonous liquid seeps and then morphs into a glowing, gelatinous ooze that invades the soil. Forbes wrestles with the urge to alert authorities, but local interests intervene. Charlie Davidson, a local realtor and head of the chamber of commerce, fears that news of the incident could derail the TVA’s reservoir project. Esther, Forbes’s bored wife, also pressures him to stay quiet, worried about how a scandal could affect their property values. The sense of ordinary life clashing with an inexplicable menace saturates the early scenes, and the town’s self-interest begins to mask the growing danger.

Soon the farm begins to feel the consequences of the alien liquid. Water from the well grows cloudy and tastes foul. Fruits and vegetables look enormous, yet their flesh is oddly rotten inside. The livestock behave erratically, displaying signs of infection and aggression. Alice is attacked by infected chickens, and Cyrus narrowly escapes a deadly incident with a horse. Frances, once steady in her faith and routine, begins to sprout grotesque boils that distort her features and drive her into violent acts against her own family. The family’s attempt to explain the misfortune as divine punishment only deepens the fear and confusion, while Nathan, convinced that they are living through a terrible reckoning, locks Frances away to protect Zack and Alice from her escalating madness. Zack, resourceful and determined, cheats the infection by stealing clean water and food from Forbes’s home, slipping between deceit and duty to shield his sister.

Forbes seizes a more analytical approach, secretly obtaining a water sample from the Cranes’ well and taking it to a nearby lab for analysis. The water contains an unknown element that appears to rewrite its own molecular makeup, hinting at a truly alien biology. The situation intensifies when Carl Willis, a TVA representative surveying the area for the planned reservoir, enters the Cranes’ house to drink from the kitchen faucet. He is attacked and nearly killed by Frances, who, driven insane by the mutagen, mutates in horrifying ways. Esther and Davidson come to the farm searching for Forbes, but they are attacked by feral dogs and caught in the chaos; Esther is killed, and Davidson hides in the cellar, only to be found and consumed by Frances as the household descends further into panic and violence. The infected cows shed their skin to reveal maggots and worms within, a grotesque sign of the mutating threat, and the cows explode in a torrent of insects that coats Nathan and Cyrus.

By this point, Nathan and Cyrus are themselves infected, their minds fraying as the disease spreads. A guilt-ridden Forbes returns in a quiet bid to rescue Zack and Alice, but Nathan strikes him down before barricading the door. Cyrus attacks Alice, and Zack fights back, stashing his sister away in a closet as the house trembles and shifts. The moment of truth comes when Willis arrives and shoots Nathan to prevent further carnage, just as the building buckles and begins to collapse. Zack and Alice are guided out by Willis, who also carries his own burden of infection, while the structure sinks into a glowing, heaving earth. As the dust settles, a dying Nathan and Cyrus succumb to the collapse, leaving Willis, Zack, and Alice to escape with their lives.

Months later, Willis lies in a hospital bed, heavily bandaged from the infection that has spread more slowly through his system because he drank only a small amount of the farm’s water. A television report in the background promises that authorities will eradicate the blight. Yet far from the farm, the ground and trees continue to heave under a spreading tide of the alien liquid, which seeps into the landscape at night. A chilling reminder remains: the mutagenic force that began on a Tennessee farm is still alive, and its plans for Earth are not yet finished. The narrative leaves the door open to a larger confrontation, suggesting that the hostile entity may be gathering strength for a broader invasion, even as local communities cope with the fallout and the uneasy question of what comes next.
