During a meteor shower said to be the most spectacular in 10,000 years, an asteroid hidden by the meteor field strikes the Moon. Fragments of the asteroid and of the Moon itself pierce Earth’s atmosphere and make impact, causing initial damage that’s visible on the lunar surface from our planet. The early effects appear minor, but the Moon’s orbit seems to drift slightly closer to Earth. As days pass, strange anomalies emerge on our world—cell phone disturbances, unusual static discharges, and odd tidal behavior—prompting scientists to look for a deeper cause.
The world’s leading scientists, including Alex Kittner, Maddie Rhodes, and Roland Emerson, begin piecing together clues that point to a permanent alteration of the Moon’s properties. They discover that the asteroid that hit the Moon was actually a fragment of a brown dwarf—the remnant of a dead star. This fragment is highly magnetized and, despite being only 19 kilometers across, more massive than the Earth, and it remains lodged inside the Moon. When the Moon’s orbit becomes more elliptical and brings it closer to Earth, electromagnetic surges begin to affect the surface, causing people, vehicles, and other objects to levitate at random around the world. The team concludes that the Moon’s magnetized core could be the culprit behind these bizarre events, and they race to understand the full scope of the threat.
With the clock ticking, the scientists determine that the Moon’s new trajectory will bring it into collision with Earth in 39 days. A failed attempt by the United States to destroy the Moon with nuclear missiles sets the stage for a bold, international plan: a mission to the Moon to construct a device that will magnetize the Moon’s core and force the embedded brown-dwarf fragment to disgorge, thereby eliminating the magnetic effects and restoring a stable orbit. The mission brings together an American astronaut Flight Commander Courtney Batterton and a Russian cosmonaut, a team led by experienced researchers David James Elliott as Alex Kittner, Natasha Henstridge as Maddie Rhodes, and Benjamin Sadler as Roland Emerson. The plan is understood to be dangerous and potentially a one-way trip, underscoring the gravity of what they’re attempting.
Parallel to the space mission, human stories unfold on Earth. Roland’s pregnant fiancée, Martina Altmann Florentine Lahme, is traveling across Germany on a levitating train that derails; she and an American, Bob Pierce Benjamin Ayres, survive and quickly marry. Alex’s children are left in the care of their late mother’s father, Lloyd James Cromwell. When the family tries to drive cross-country to reach Alex, their car levitates and crashes, and the grandfather suffers a fatal heart attack, shaping the emotional stakes of the crisis. Derek, a resource hoarder they encounter at a convenience store, initially plans to leave with the supplies but ends up joining the push to reach safety in Washington, DC, bringing the kids along on a tense, uncertain journey.
On the Moon, the electromagnetic device is finally assembled. Roland and Courtney travel in a hovercraft to locate a fissure in the lunar surface, but debris strikes their craft, sending Courtney plummeting into the fissure while Roland is left trapped. He urges Sergei Pitinkov to launch the module so that he and Alex can be saved. The device is activated, triggering a massive explosion that incinerates Roland. The Moon splits in two as the brown-dwarf fragment shoots toward the Sun, and the two halves eventually settle into new, stable orbits around the Earth. Sergei and Alex manage to escape and communicate their survival back to Earth.
Back on the home planet, Alex is joyfully reunited with his children and with Maddie Rhodes, and they decide to return to Canada. As they prepare to depart, they turn their eyes to the sky, where they glimpse the two halves of the Moon now in their new orbits, a stark reminder of the peril they faced and the uncertain road ahead. The moment closes with a quiet pull of resolve as they head toward safety, hopeful that their world can heal after the cataclysmic events.
