Two students from the astronomy club, Leo Biederman and his girlfriend, Sarah Hotchner (played by Leelee Sobieski), stumble upon an unidentified object in the night sky. Their teacher, Mr. Perry, suspects it could be a satellite and encourages them to document their findings and reach out to Dr. Wolf, a professional astronomer. Dr. Wolf confirms that the object is indeed a comet on a collision course with Earth.
