The Double Life of Veronique

In 1968, a Polish girl is captivated by the beauty of winter stars shining bright in the night sky. Meanwhile, a girl in France finds joy in the first spring leaf, signaling the change of seasons and the passage of time.

Fast forward to 1990, a young Polish woman named Weronika is performing with her choir at an outdoor concert. A sudden and fierce rainstorm interrupts their show, casting a shadow on what should have been a joyous event.

That same night, after the chaotic concert, Weronika shares a heartfelt moment with her boyfriend, Antek. She prepares for her trip to Kraków the next day to care for her ailing aunt, feeling a peculiar sensation of not being alone.

Upon arriving in Kraków, Weronika secures her place in a local choir after a successful audition. This fresh start offers her hope and excitement amidst her personal struggles.

While wandering through the Main Square, Weronika spots a French tourist who resembles her closely. Spellbound, she watches as this doppelgänger boards a bus, and Weronika snaps photographs, intrigued by this uncanny connection.

During a concert where she is performing a solo, tragedy strikes when Weronika experiences a cardiac arrest. Her life is cut short, leaving behind her dreams and unresolved feelings.

On the same day in Clermont-Ferrand, France, Véronique mourns after a heartfelt encounter with her boyfriend. Taking this loss to heart, she decides to leave her choir, signaling a significant change in her life.

Véronique gathers her class for a marionette show at school, engaging her students in creativity. Later, she leads them in a performance of a piece by the 18th-century composer Van den Budenmayer, further deepening her connection to music.

While out, Véronique meets a puppeteer at a traffic signal who hints at the importance of her actions. Shortly after, she receives a mysterious phone call featuring a choir performing Van den Budenmayer’s music, deepening her sense of intrigue.

Véronique finds a package with a shoelace, leading her to learn more about the puppeteer, Alexandre Fabbri. This discovery begins her journey to understand the mysterious bond shared with the Polish girl Weronika.

Guided by a postage stamp, Véronique arrives at Gare Saint-Lazare in Paris to meet Alexandre Fabbri at a café. During an emotional confrontation, he admits to sending her the packages as a way to draw her closer to him.

Initially upset, Véronique checks into a nearby hotel, but Alexandre soon follows to apologize. Their emotions boil over as they share feelings, culminating in a tranquil night spent together, signaling a pivotal moment in their relationship.

The next morning, Véronique opens up to Alexandre about her lifelong feeling of existing 'in two places at the same time.' This revelation hints at a deeper connection to Weronika’s fate and destiny.
