Jim Grant, a former militant of the Weather Underground, becomes a wanted man in 1980 after being involved in a bank robbery in Michigan that leads to the murder of a security guard. Following these events, he successfully evades capture and establishes a new life as a defense attorney in Albany, New York.

On October 3, 2011, Sharon Solarz, another ex-member of the Weather Underground, is arrested, prompting a journalist named Ben Shepard to see an opportunity for a major story. The arrest awakens old fears and associations that lead Ben to Jim Grant's hidden past.
