Jim Meade, a military veteran with big dreams, hijacked the plane to obtain a large sum of money. The film presents him as an ambitious man who saw the hijacking as his opportunity to escape his circumstances and start fresh. His military background gave him the skills and knowledge of aircraft needed to execute such a plan.

Gruen deduced that the hijack operation could only have been mounted by someone with intimate knowledge of the crew and aircraft. This clue came from their shared Army days, Meade's military background meant he had the technical knowledge required to plan and execute the hijacking. Their past connection allowed Gruen to connect the dots that led to identifying his former sergeant's student as the hijacker.

After the crash, Meade held Gruen's gun and had the upper hand, but instead of taking all the money, he chose to leave Gruen with a few bundles while taking the rest for Hannah to collect. This was part of Meade's strategic escape plan, he kept most of the money to ensure his future with his wife while using the split to distract and satisfy Gruen enough to end the pursuit.

Gruen was fired by his employer but refused to quit the pursuit. His motivation shifted from professional duty to personal greed, he wanted to recover the money for himself and claim the reward. The film makes clear his obsession with the money over catching the criminal, as he pushes forward even without employer backing.

At an aircraft boneyard near Tucson, Arizona, the Meades acquired a hot-air balloon as a new means of escape. This provided them with an unlikely and dramatic escape option as they ran out of stolen cars and needed another way to elude their pursuers. The balloon represents one of several increasingly risky escape methods they use throughout the film.

After parachuting into the Washington State forest with the ransom money, Meade concealed the stolen cash inside the carcass of a deer. This was a strategic move to hide evidence from the massive manhunt that followed. By burying the money in the animal, he could return later to retrieve it while keeping it hidden from the authorities searching the forest.

Remson pursued what he believed was the Meades' truck at a crossroads, only to discover it was merely a look-alike vehicle. This final misidentification stalls the pursuit and allows the Meades to escape. The scene adds a final twist of irony, showing how the pursuers were fooled by a coincidental resemblance.

Meade chased Gruen in a barely functional Boeing-Stearman PT-17 cropduster, managing to force Gruen's vehicle off the road. However, the tense aerial pursuit resulted in a fierce crash for both aircraft. Meade's own plane went down despite his attempt to run Gruen off the road, making the crash a turning point that led to their final confrontation.

Meade left the manhunt behind and sought out his estranged wife Hannah, who runs a river-rafting company. Her business provided a perfect cover for their getaway and a way to move the hidden cash. The reunion represents a shifting alliance as Hannah becomes entangled in his escape plan, helping him navigate the changing landscape of pursuit.
