The Cold Summer of 1953

In the summer of 1953, the year Stalin died, the Soviet Union erupts with a sudden, uneasy freedom. An amnesty frees scores of former Gulag prisoners, many of whom return to the world with hardened instincts and little place to go. The countryside, still scarred by war and the weight of a totalitarian past, feels the tremor of this mass release, and a thin line of order begins to fray under the looming shadow of lawlessness.

A remote village becomes the epicentre of this tension when the newly freed ex‑inmates arrive, turning the quiet hamlet into a tinderbox of uncertainty.
