Buck, a clever hybrid of St. Bernard and Scotch collie, lives the easy life on Raymond Ducasse’s estate in Santa Clara, California, blissfully unaware that the fall-1897 Klondike Gold Rush has spurred a growing market for sled dogs. His sheltered world shatters when the estate’s gardener, Manuel, barters Buck away and sells him to a man who ships him to Seattle. There, a man in a red sweater, Barry Blake, brutalizes the young dog with a club, teaching him the harsh first lesson of “primitive law.” Buck soon enters the hands of Robert-Pierre Côté as François, a stern dog-driver named Perrault’s partner, who takes him on a voyage to Dyea, Alaska.

On the way, the dog team meets a skilled duo: the daring dispatch-courier Perrault and the experienced dog-driver Francois—each playing a pivotal role in Buck’s education. The men push the team hard, chasing a fast-sinking trail record, and Buck begins to understand what it takes to lead. When Dave, the wheel-dog, can no longer pull his weight, the team must make a painful choice, and Dave is euthanized to spare the others.

After a grueling return to Dyea, the dogs are sold off to new masters. The trio of new owners—Hal, his sister Mercedes, and her husband Charles—are a contrast to the seasoned pack: Charles Edwin Powell brings Hal, a rash and impatient youth, while Bronwen Booth plays Mercedes and Burke Lawrence portrays Charles. Hal’s impatience leads to an overburdened, ill-fated crossing, where the load becomes too heavy and the sled tips. The couple’s pursuit of gold leads them to a fateful moment: Thornton is slain by a Yeehat warrior, a brutal blow Buck barely survives. Buck’s response is swift and merciless—the Yeehats die, and the Ghost Dog legend takes root in the tribe’s stories.

With Thornton gone, Buck’s world shifts inexorably toward the wild. He answers the call once more, now as a leader of a wolf pack, a figure both revered and feared. The Yeehats whisper of a Ghost Dog roaming the valley, a specter who stalks the forest and reminds people of the force of nature that Buck has become. In this final transformation, Buck’s story closes on a note both haunting and inexorable, as he surrenders to the younger world’s song and leads the pack through a valley that no longer welcomes him in.
