The Courage of Kavik, the Wolf Dog

Kavik was sold for $4000 to George Hunter, a Seattle businessman who wanted a top champion sled dog to enhance his racing interests. Despite Kavik's victory, his owner saw an lucrative offer and made the transaction immediately after the race.

Kavik's near-death experience during the plane crash left him with severe trauma. The violent crash and being left battered in the cold caused him to become wary and fearful of other dogs, leading him to bolt when faced with canine company.

After escaping from Hunter's Seattle kennel, Kavik stowed away on a coastal ferry heading north. After Hunter came to Copper City demanding Kavik's return, Andy and his father Kurt argued that Kavik would be happier staying with the Evans family who had nursed him back to health. Facing their passionate defense and the obvious bond between Kavik and Andy, Hunter reluctantly agreed to sell the dog for a minimal amount rather than fight further.

Andy Evans pleaded desperately with his parents to let the local doctor examine the injured dog. Despite the doctor's initial reluctance, Andy's persistence and the dog's critical condition convinced Dr. Walker to assess and treat Kavik's multiple injuries.

The plane carrying Kavik to Seattle crashed in snow-covered wilderness during transport. The pilot was killed in the crash, and Kavik was left battered, nearly dead, and graver injured in the freezing cold before Andy found him.

Despite the lavish setting of Hunter's Seattle home, Kavik was unhappy because he was separated from Andy, the boy who had saved his life. The trauma from his crash experience and the loneliness of captivity drove him to escape in search of returning to the only home where he felt truly bonds.
