As Julie Styron (Stockard Channing) navigates the skies to attend an important meeting, a sudden request from her CEO to share a meal sends her into a whirlwind of anxiety. The looming threat of losing her job drives her to consult headhunter Nick Harris (Fred Weller), seeking advice to bolster her professional standing. However, before she can put any backup plans in motion, her day goes awry due to the late arrival of her new assistant Paula Murphy (Julia Stiles), whose 45-minute tardiness leads to a catastrophic meeting that forces Julie to make the tough call of letting Paula go.

Later that evening, an unexpected promotion to CEO leaves Julie feeling a mix of elation and confusion.
