The movie opens showcasing a panoramic view of a city’s skyline. J.J. (Rod Perry) walks alongside a friend down a bustling street when they pause, prompting one of them to point towards a house. They ascend the stairs that lead to the front door, but as Tommy opens it, he’s caught off guard—his gun jams, and before he can react, a figure from inside shoots him. As he crumples to the ground, dying in the arms of J.J. in a nearby alley, his friend flees, only to be rescued by Nate Williams (Jimmy Witherspoon), who offers assistance and extracts the bullet from J.J.’s arm.
The following morning, curiosity piques J.J.’s interest as he engages Williams in conversation, questioning why he risked his safety to save him. Williams admires J.J.’s audacity in attempting to breach a gangster’s domain, while J.J.’s underlying motivation ties back to survival, an instinct to “get some bread.” Williams, recognizing the harshness of their reality, imparts wisdom for navigating the streets and hands J.J. some cash, marking the onset of J.J.’s ascent in the gritty urban hierarchy.
As J.J. escalates to a formidable status in the drug trade, he harbors aspirations for even greater power. Embracing the belief that money translates to dignity, he grapples with a rival, Tony Burton (Don Chastain), a white gangster who inflicts heroin upon their predominantly black neighborhood, leading to widespread addiction among the residents. In an effort to reclaim his territory, J.J. consults Diablo (Damu King) about enforcing neighborhood security against Tony’s influence.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Joe, a corrupt cop thriving on drug dealers’ bribes, approaches J.J. at his club, where J.J. boldly informs him of his willingness to challenge Tony and his ilk if they continue exploiting the community. Joe relays J.J.’s message to Tony while lounging poolside at his estate, where Tony’s defiance and refusal to retreat become evident.
Later, the tension mounts in a private meeting at the club where J.J. and Williams, accompanied by Williams’ daughter Yvonne, exchange heated words over J.J.’s pursuit against Tony. Williams cautions J.J. about crossing the line, but J.J. remains steadfast in his mission to eradicate the vice invading their community.
The next day, Tony confronts Williams, insisting on maintaining the status quo and threatens violence if J.J. persists in harassing his operations. Williams stands firm, warning Tony that any pursuit of bloodshed could easily spill over onto his side.
In a setup to establish dominion, J.J. engages in some spirited exchanges with his men at the gym, underscoring the shifting dynamics of power, while incidents of intimidation occur as J.J.’s gang asserts their authority against rival dealers. In a personal moment, J.J. shares an intimate encounter with Yvonne, revealing his affection yet simultaneous reluctance to fully commit.
As the narrative unfolds, Diablo’s crew intercepts a drug shipment and interrogates a captive white driver, further emphasizing J.J.’s determination to fortify his territorial claims against encroaching rivals. However, underpinning these confrontations is the shady alliance between Lieutenant Joe and Tony, who plot against J.J.
Tension reaches a boiling point when J.J. learns about a hefty drug shipment upcoming to Tony. With each move escalating the tension, J.J. boldly orchestrates a scheme at the airport that culminates in a full-blown shootout with Tony’s men while simultaneously taunting Tony.
Fueled by desperation after suffering losses, Tony storms Williams’ home, seeking revenge and information. In a violent exchange, Tony brutally attacks Williams before kidnapping Yvonne, leveraging her as bait for J.J.’s stolen drugs.
As conflict escalates, J.J. engages in a fraught dialogue with Diablo, who challenges his leadership under pressure. J.J. and Tony negotiate terms for Yvonne’s release, leading to a tense showdown at a hospital where the finale erupts into a climactic clash of gunfire. With Yvonne seizing a moment of desperation, she plunges a knife deep into Tony, ultimately cementing her role in the narrative as the tragedy concludes with J.J. and Diablo stepping forward, confronting the aftermath of violence and loss.
