The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984) Timeline Explained – Every Event in Order

The oscillation overthruster is a device invented by Buckaroo Banzai and Dr. Tohichi Hikita that allows objects to pass through solid matter by oscillating at the right frequency. Banzai tests it by driving his Jet Car through a mountain, which opens a portal to the 8th Dimension. The device becomes the key to both saving Earth and enabling the Red Lectroids' plans for invasion.

The Red Lectroids are an alien faction exiled to the 8th Dimension after losing a war to the peaceful Black Lectroids from Planet 10. Their leader, Lord John Whorfin, possessed Dr. Lizardo in 1938 and used him to create a dimensional breach, allowing the Red Lectroids to escape to Earth. They came to seize the overthruster so they could free their imprisoned allies and wage war against both the Black Lectroids and humanity.

Foreshadowing: The Orson Welles War of the Worlds broadcast in 1938 was actually a real recording of the Red Lectroids' failed invasion attempt.

In 1938, Buckaroo Banzai and Dr. Emilio Lizardo worked together to build a prototype overthruster. Lizardo was impatient and tested it prematurely, causing an accident that trapped him between dimensions where he was brutally attacked by alien beings. He was eventually rescued but emerged violent and mentally unstable, leading to his institutionalization at the Trenton Home for the Criminally Insane. When he sees Banzai succeed on the news, he plots to steal the perfected overthruster to escape and complete his original plan.

The Cavaliers discover at Yoyodyne Propulsion Systems that the famous 1938 Orson Welles radio broadcast of War of the Worlds was not a fictional dramatization but an actual recording of the Red Lectroids' failed attempt to invade Earth. This explains how Welles's broadcast coincidentally matched the real events of the alien landing that night.

Foreshadowing: The Red Lectroids' 1938 invasion was foreshadowed by the Orson Welles broadcast.

Buckaroo and John Parker infiltrate Yoyodyne and commandeer a spacecraft to confront the Red Lectroids. Without the proper overthruster, Whorfin attempts to use a faulty dimensional model, causing the spaceship to crash through the Yoyodyne wall. In the final showdown, Buckaroo and Parker battle Whorfin directly, seize control of the pod, and use its weapons to destroy Whorfin and his Red Lectroid cohorts, preventing the full-scale invasion.

When Buckaroo tested the overthruster by driving through a mountain, he accidentally pierced the dimensional barrier into the 8th Dimension. While there, an alien organism from that realm latched onto his Jet Car. When Buckaroo returned to Earth, the organism came with him, which later helps the Black Lectroids confirm that Buckaroo had indeed crossed into the 8th Dimension.

Yoyodyne Propulsion Systems was a front company run by the Red Lectroids on Earth. Hidden beneath its facilities was a spaceship designed to breach the dimensional barrier and reach the 8th Dimension, disguised as a United States Air Force bomber. The location served as the Red Lectroids' base of operations for their invasion plans and where they held their kidnapped prisoners including Dr. Hikita.
