Buckaroo Banzai, portrayed by a truly captivating actor, along with his esteemed mentor, Dr. Tohichi Hikita, has been diligently working on their revolutionary invention: the oscillation overthruster. This groundbreaking device enables the remarkable ability for objects to move seamlessly through solid matter. Banzai puts the device to the test, launching his sleek Jet Car through the very heart of a mountain. As he pierces through the dimensional barrier, he unexpectedly finds himself transported to an alien realm before returning to his own world with an unexpected passenger - an alien organism clinging to his vehicle.
On another front, Dr. Emilio Lizardo, who finds himself imprisoned in the Trenton Home for the Criminally Insane, is stirred to action by a news report showcasing Banzai’s success. The broadcast rekindles memories of a collaborative endeavor from 1938 when Banzai and Lizardo had tried to create an overthruster prototype. However, Lizardo’s reckless ambition led to chaos, as his premature testing resulted in his entrapment between dimensions, where he suffered brutal attacks from alien beings. Rescued by colleagues, Lizardo emerges as a changed man—violent and deeply troubled. With Banzai having finally unravelled the mysteries of the 8th dimension, Lizardo sees an opportunity to escape and plots to seize the overthruster for his own purposes.
Meanwhile, while performing at a lively nightclub, Banzai’s band, “The Hong Kong Cavaliers,” finds their musical set interrupted by his concern for a distressed woman, Penny Priddy. Moved by her turmoil, Banzai improvises a heartfelt ballad. However, Penny attempts to take her own life, mistakenly thought to be a threat to Banzai himself. After her arrest and questioning, Banzai discovers she is the long-lost identical twin sister of his deceased wife, Peggy. This shocking revelation compels Banzai to take immediate action to secure her release.
As Banzai prepares to discuss his incredible experiences with the media, he is suddenly jolted by an electrical charge from an unexpected phone call. Around the same time, mysterious humanoid aliens infiltrate the event, abducting Hikita and causing upheaval. Energized by the bizarre encounter, Banzai quickly realizes the nature of these invaders—extraterrestrial beings—and embarks on a thrilling mission to rescue Hikita and outsmart the abductors. In a joint effort with the Cavaliers, they successfully navigate the perilous situation, escaping from their pursuers unharmed.
Upon returning to the Banzai Institute, they receive an urgent message from John Parker, who brings news from John Emdall, the leader of the benevolent Black Lectroids from Planet 10. In a recorded message, Emdall explains that his people are engaged in a violent conflict with the malicious Red Lectroids. The Red Lectroids had been exiled to the fringes of the 8th dimension, but an ill-fated experiment by Lizardo allowed their malevolent leader, Lord John Whorfin, to seize control of him and orchestrate a breakout of his followers. This event sets into motion a series of catastrophic consequences.
With Banzai now in possession of the perfected overthruster, Emdall is alarmed that Whorfin will stop at nothing to secure it, which would allow him to free his imprisoned allies and initiate a devastating war that threatens not just the Red Lectroids, but all humanity as well. Determined to avert disaster, the Black Lectroids enlist Banzai to eliminate the threat posed by Whorfin and his army.
The Cavaliers trace the Red Lectroids to Yoyodyne Propulsion Systems in New Jersey, uncovering a nefarious plot. They discover a recording of Orson Welles’s iconic broadcast of The War of the Worlds, realizing it eerily foreshadowed the actual events of the Red Lectroids’ Earth landing in 1938. Hidden within Yoyodyne is a spaceship designed to breach the dimensional barrier and reach the 8th dimension, deceptively disguised as a cutting-edge United States Air Force bomber.
As tensions escalate, the group learns of Penny’s kidnapping by the Red Lectroids, who are unaware she possesses the overthruster. The Cavaliers spring into action, devising a plan to rescue her while simultaneously racing against time to prevent a looming catastrophe. Banzai decides to infiltrate the Yoyodyne compound solo, before being joined by the rest of the Cavaliers and their new allies, the Blue Blaze Irregulars.
In a brave act of heroism, Banzai successfully rescues Penny from the clutches of the Red Lectroids, engaging in combat with their attackers. Though victorious, Penny is wounded and left unconscious. As the Cavaliers attend to her injuries, Banzai and Parker secretly commandeer a spacecraft from Yoyodyne, intending to thwart Whorfin’s evil plans. But without the overthruster, Whorfin opts for a faulty dimensional model, resulting in calamity as the Red Lectroid spaceship crashes through the Yoyodyne wall and launches into the skies.
In a final showdown, Banzai and Parker encounter Lord Whorfin in a brutal struggle. They ingeniously seize control of the pod and unleash its powerful arsenal upon their enemies. In a triumphant display of courage and skill, they manage to destroy Whorfin and his Red Lectroid cohorts, safeguarding their return to Earth. Banzai takes to the skies with a parachute, while Parker boards the pod as they achieve a crucial victory that precludes a full-scale war.
However, joy is short-lived as Banzai learns that Penny has succumbed to her injuries, leaving him heartbroken and desolate. Just as he prepares to say goodbye, Emdall intervenes, rejuvenating Penny with an electrifying surge of energy, granting a renewed hope and the possibility for these star-crossed lovers to reunite and rekindle their love.
