Spencer Stone and Alek Skarlatos are students at a private Christian high school located in a suburban area. The duo shares a mutual fascination for firearms, frequently landing themselves in the principal’s office due to their rebellious behavior. During one such visit, they cross paths with Anthony Sadler, a fellow student notorious for his mischief, and the three instantly bond over their experiences. Both Spencer and Alek come from single-parent households, where their mothers often advocate for them during disciplinary meetings. The boys are captivated by military drills and strategic exercises, yet they often face academic challenges and behavioral issues.
While working at a local smoothie shop, Spencer encounters a Marine recruiter. He curiously asks the recruiter about his ideal military branch if given a second chance. The recruiter praises the Air Force para-rescue unit for their life-saving endeavors, spurring Spencer’s interest. Inspired by the recruiter’s words, Spencer commits to a rigorous workout routine to shed some extra pounds. Over the months of intense training, he transforms his physique and ultimately enlists in the Air Force to pursue a career as a Pararescueman.
After completing basic training, Spencer attempts to qualify for para-rescue school but is unfortunately disqualified due to a depth perception issue. Disheartened, he opts for other available Air Force roles and finds himself stationed overseas. Despite the challenges, it becomes clear that Spencer thrives in crisis situations, demonstrating a boldness to think outside the box when faced with emergencies. Meanwhile, Alek, after enlisting in the Army, prepares for a deployment to the Middle East. During a Skype call, Alek shares his plans to visit his girlfriend in Germany, prompting the trio to arrange a rendezvous during their next leaves. Spencer convinces Anthony, now a college student, to join them on a European vacation.
Upon their reunion in Germany, the three friends decide to venture to Amsterdam before heading to France. Everything seems to be going smoothly as they board the 15:17 train to Paris, but unease quickly sets in when American-born Frenchman Mark Moogalian notices one of the onboard toilets being locked for an unusually long time. When Mark investigates, a terrorist bursts forth, brandishing an assault rifle. A brave fellow passenger, Damien A., quickly subdues the terrorist momentarily, allowing Mark to seize the rifle, but he is shot in the back during the struggle. Panicked passengers rush forward in a desperate attempt to escape the chaos.
The situation escalates when the terrorist moves towards Spencer and his friends. Without hesitation, Spencer leaps into action, recognizing that their survival—and that of the other passengers—depends on his bravery. In a heart-pounding moment, he sprints towards the assailant, just as the terrorist’s weapon malfunctions. Seizing this opportunity, Spencer tackles the armed individual, successfully disarming him. As he fights to subdue the terrorist, Alek, Anthony, and other passengers join the fray, ultimately overpowering the rogue attacker.
After gaining control, Spencer quickly attends to Mark, plugging the wound in his neck to prevent excessive blood loss. When the police arrive at the next stop, they find Spencer has bravely neutralized the threat and begin administering first aid to Mark and the other injured passengers. Thanks to the prompt action from paramedics, Mark is whisked away to the hospital, where he receives critical care and is expected to survive.
In recognition of their extraordinary courage, Spencer, Alek, and Anthony are celebrated as heroes by the French Republic during an official ceremony. The terrorist, equipped with over 300 rounds of ammunition, had intended to unleash devastation on the train’s occupants. The incredible misfire that allowed Spencer a moment to act was calculated to be a thousand-to-one chance—an astonishing stroke of fate. French officials, acknowledging Spencer’s selflessness, honor him with the prestigious French Legion of Honour. On September 22, 2015, Mark Moogalian was similarly honored with the Legion of Honor by President François Hollande, commending his brave actions during the attack.
