In the Ming Dynasty, a moonlit wasteland glows with bonfires as the legendary fighter Yehe Changgong deliberately loses a duel to the Manchu warrior Nalan, stepping away from the title of Supreme Master of Martial Arts. He seeks a quiet retirement in the sleepy Sideroad Town, tucked beneath the shadow of the Imperial City, where he plans to spend his days peacefully, serenading the night with his erhu.
Mingyue Xin catches his eye, and the two of them spar in a duel that blends music with danger—a half‑seduction, half‑stand‑off. They agree to meet on the roof of the Royal Palace under the next full moon to finish their shared sonata. That night, however, the palace is breached by three masked thieves aiming to seize a rumored treasure map. They are outpaced by Xin, a ninja in disguise, and a rooftop chase leads them to Lanruo Temple. Changgong follows and saves Xin from the thieves, but the map is lost in the chaos. After a brutal scuffle, all five are left injured and forced to retreat, each nursing a wound and a stubborn glimmer of pursuit as they disappear into separate paths in pursuit of the prize.
Five years pass without a rightful seeker discovering the treasure, and the once‑fierce group has shed their identities, blending into ordinary village life. Changgong and Xin run the Dragon Inn with their adopted daughter Xiaowei, while the three thieves have reinvented themselves as a shopkeeper, a singer, and a monk. They all remain under the control of the young landowner, Lord Xu, a pampered rich kid who carries a soft spot for Xiaowei. Xu struggles to win respect from the villagers and to collect their rents, until a telling slip reveals that he is the custodian of the treasure map.
An accidental pigeon post from mayor Gu Yuejin sparks a new upheaval, drawing a vast army toward the town. Among the reinforcements is the second army led by Nalan, who has not forgotten his rival. Xin, Xiaowei, and Xu pursue the rumor of the treasure, while Changgong and Nalan resume their duel, a second clash that mirrors the old tension between them. The five former companions converge on the same quarry, each driven by different motives, and the long‑lost treasure—only to discover that it is not gold or glory, but a simple spade.
As the spade becomes the focal point of a dangerous scramble, Nalan discards it only to stumble and fall upon it, meeting his fate in a cruel twist of consequence. The story closes with a celebration that gathers every resident of Sideroad Town in one last, communal gathering, a quiet aftermath to a tale built on rivalry, redemption, and shared history.
