The film begins as two men, Oleg (Oleg Taktarov) and Emil (Karel Roden), navigate through US customs in New York. Oleg, with a passion for photography, enthusiastically discusses his interests with the customs officer, while Emil exhibits signs of anxiety. In a different part of the city, Robert Hawkins grapples with his assistant Cassandra (Kim Cattrall) about the nature of news, insisting that “tragedy sells more.” In their quest to boost ratings, they decide to shadow Detective Eddie Fleming during a stakeout. Eddie, a notorious figure when sober, is known for his alcohol issues but remains a media darling.
As Oleg pursues a new camera, he and Emil arrive at Milos’s (Vladimir Mashkov) apartment to retrieve their share from a bank heist. Tensions flare when Milos accuses Oleg of exposing them, prompting a deadly altercation where Emil stabs Milos and kills his wife in a shocking turn of events, all while Oleg captures the grisly scene on film. Neighbor Daphne (Vera Farmiga) witnesses the chaos from her hiding spot and makes a hasty exit unnoticed by Emil.
Responding to the fire at the apartment, Fire Marshal Jordy Warsaw arrives on-site after handling an unrelated incident. He quickly deduces that the situation indicates foul play, especially upon finding a timer that suggests the fire was intentionally set. Meanwhile, Emil discovers Daphne’s wallet and realizes she is in the country illegally, leading him to seek out an escort for information.
Following a string of violent encounters, Eddie and Jordy begin to connect the dots surrounding the murders. They track down the escort service and encounter Rose (Charlize Theron), who identifies Daphne from a police sketch. In a nail salon where Daphne works, Oleg films the interaction as Emil threatens her, creating a frantic escape with the authorities hot on their heels.
As Eddie juggles his complex personal life with his girlfriend Nicolette (Melina Kanakaredes), he finds himself entangled in an increasingly dangerous web of deceit. Oleg and Emil locate Eddie’s address through Detective Jackson’s wallet, leading to a brutal confrontation at Eddie’s home. Emil reveals his chilling plan to claim insanity in their killings, asserting they could profit from their notoriety. The scene escalates as Eddie fights back but ultimately succumbs to brutality.
At Eddie’s wake, Emil approaches Robert Hawkins with an offer to sell footage of Eddie’s murder. The narrative intensifies with Jordy’s efforts to protect Daphne and unravel the truth, resulting in a dangerous showdown. Emil’s claim of insanity is put to the test when he faces consequences for his actions, leading to a tense climax where motives collide and loyalties are challenged.
In a final act of chaos, the implications of their actions result in a tragic conclusion where no one emerges unscathed, and the boundaries of morality and justice are called into question. The film leaves viewers questioning the real cost of fame and the extent to which individuals will go to secure their legacy. With Eddie’s badge returned to Nicolette, the film concludes as tensions rise, and the screen fades to black, marking the end of a harrowing tale filled with darkness and unpredictability.
