The film opens with a shabby old man living as a recluse near a famous temple in Tapeswaram. When he steps into the village, shepherds mistake him for a thief and beat him. They hand him over to the police, and the officer in charge identifies him as Anantha Rama Sharma, a once-celebrated Carnatic musician who has been missing for four years. The inspector Radhakarishna then informs his aunt, Jayanthi, who teaches yoga and music in the village, about the mysterious arrival and the man’s storied past. This history unfolds through a careful flashback that ties the present to a decisive, painful history of art, ego, and redemption.

[Anantha Rama Sharma] is introduced as a towering figure in Carnatic music, revered yet unapologetically egoistic. He carries himself with the confidence of a man who believes his own greatness is self-evident, to the point that he rejects the Padma Shri, insisting that the government awardees he’s been grouped with are unworthy of mention beside him. This attitude colors his relationships and decisions, showing a man who defines success by personal glory rather than shared achievement.

In the same village lives Gangadhar, a young man from a working-class family who rejects conventional social norms—he shuns formal schooling and music classes in favor of sitting by the riverside, letting the water and the breeze shape his melodies. His raw talent catches the eye of the village’s music teacher, the aunt of Inspector Radhakarishna, who recognizes a rare gift and vows to nurture it. Gangadhar’s father runs a small tiffin center and energetically encourages his son’s musical dreams, seeing in him the potential to join the great Carnatic tradition.

Gangadhar’s signal moment arrives when he performs a piece titled “Pranathi Pranathi” at the Tapeswaram Meher Baba’s ashram, impressing [Anantha Rama Sharma] who attends the concert. This performance earns Gangadhar widespread praise, and his contribution is celebrated as a child prodigy by everyone, including [Sarada], who is [Anantha Rama Sharma]’s wife. In that moment, the collision of two generations of talent—one revolutionary in his humility and the other proud in his genius—begins to set the emotional course of the film.

Driven by jealousy, the elder musician tries to suppress the younger talent. He invites Gangadhar to live with him and learn music more deeply, insisting that the boy must first gain the experience to perform on stage. He assigns Gangadhar to compose tunes that would be performed publicly, while simultaneously downplaying or dismissing Gangadhar’s own powerful works. The tension peaks when [Anantha Rama Sharma] executes one of Gangadhar’s tunes, “Shivani Bhavani,” at Ganapathi Sachchidananda’s ashram in Gangadhar’s absence. When Gangadhar arrives during the performance, the music no longer belongs to the student but to the elder, publicly illustrating the conflict between admiration and ownership.

Sarada discovers a hidden stash of all the tunes Gangadhar has composed, revealing the depth of the younger artist’s contributions and the elder’s fear of erosion of his own legacy. Back at home, the truth erupts in a moment of brutal honesty: the elder confesses his jealousy and even says he would be happy to kill Gangadhar and go to jail rather than let his own name be overshadowed. The confession shatters the illusion of prestige and triggers a chain of consequences that ripple through the village.

Overwhelmed by guilt and the weight of his actions, [Anantha Rama Sharma] suffers a heart attack. In a deeply tragic turn, Gangadhar, in a desperate act to protect the elder’s legacy from ruin, chooses to sacrifice himself rather than allow the elder to lose everything to a rival’s fame. The town views this as murder, not mercy, and Anantha Rama Sharma, wracked by guilt and shunned by the community, flees and withdraws from public life, drifting into a recluse existence and mental anguish.

As time passes, the elder awakens, no longer at the center of applause but in the home of Gangadhar’s music teacher. The teacher’s husband helps him see the fault lines in his own arrogance—that his dependence on fame blinded him to the true meaning of music and talent. He learns that his “change is permanent” lesson, offered through the hardships and talents of others, is a call to humility rather than a surrender of ambition. The family’s forgiveness and the promise of a new beginning nudge him toward a path of reconciliation.

In the final movement of the story, Anantha Rama Sharma returns to his roots. He sits among children in a music class at the Gangadhar Music Academy, watching his former rival’s influence persist through education and mentorship rather than through solitary ego. The once-celebrated maestro begins to relearn the basics, guided by his wife and the community that once celebrated him, rediscovering the joy of making music for its own sake and for the inspiration it provides to the next generation. The film closes on a note of quiet introspection about talent, fame, forgiveness, and the enduring power of art to unite futures across generations.
