Sivaji Ganesan’s portrayal of ‘Sikkal’ Shanmugasundaram frames a devoted nadaswaram player whose short temper sits beside a deeply sensitive heart. He crosses paths with Mohanambal, Padmini, a celebrated Bharatanatyam dancer, and the two lovers discover a shared language of music and movement that pulls them toward each other despite the boundaries of their social world.
Mohanambal’s mother, C. K. Saraswathi, known in Mohanambal’s troupe as Vadivambal, wields power and wealth as the tools of influence, imagining a secure, luxurious future for her daughter. Her ambitions threaten the couple’s fragile happiness, and Mohanambal’s defiance heightens the tensions within the family and the artistic circle around them.
Blinded by love, Mohanambal defies Vadivambal’s expectations, widening the rift that separates them. Sundaram, meanwhile, wrestles with pride and the pressures of their artful world, uncertain about what lies ahead for the two of them and the path their love might follow.
Unaware of Mohanambal’s true feelings, Sundaram plans to leave the country with Karuppayi, a folk dancer whom he treats like a sister, in hopes of escaping the mounting obstacles to their bond. The looming departure sets a clock ticking on the lovers’ chances to reconcile, while the cultural stage around them continues to demand perfection.
In a temple, Sundaram plays a Thillana on his nadaswaram as Mohanambal dances, a moment that elevates their connection and earns her the title “Thillana Mohanambal.” This shared performance becomes a beacon of their artistry and love, even as external forces press in.
The jealous landlord Nagalingam, the character known as ‘Minor’ Nagalingam and portrayed by E. R. Sahadevan, brings danger into their world by stabbing Sundaram with a poisoned knife, a cruel act born of envy and possessiveness. Sundaram survives, aided by hospital care and the kindness of Mary, a nurse played by M. Bhanumathi, whose presence provides a glimmer of hope amid the turmoil.
As recovery follows, Sundaram and Mohanambal meet again at a concert program where they perform together, defiantly moving forward in the face of Vadivambal’s objections. Their resilience rekindles a public display of their bond, even as they face the scheming of a crafty soul.
Enter Vaithi, the wily figure known as “Savadal” Vaithi and played by Nagesh. He aligns himself with the Maharaja of Madhanpur, the programme’s chief guest, promising to mold Mohanambal into the Maharaja’s mistress for his own gain. Vaithi’s manipulation hinges on deception: he tells Mohanambal that the Maharaja has invited their troupe to perform in his palace and that Sundaram will accompany them, foisting a dangerous temptation onto the couple’s already fragile trust.
At Madhanpur Palace, the Maharaja makes an advance toward Mohanambal, who rejects him, and the Maharani, loyal to Mohanambal, comes to her aid. Sundaram is left to confront the unsettling possibility that Mohanambal is wavering in her devotion, a misread born of Vaithi’s misdirection and the couple’s own insecurities.
Mohanambal, overwhelmed by fear and suspicion, runs away. The Maharaja finally reveals the truth—that Mohanambal had refused the Maharaja’s advances and loves Sundaram, not the palace’s wealth or status. Realizing his mistake, Sundaram rushes to her side, only to encounter a moment of desperation: Mohanambal, in a locked room, attempts to hang herself. Sundaram yells for her to stop, breaks the door, and saves her, a turning point that rekindles trust and cementing their commitment to one another.
With Vadivambal’s approval, the couple ultimately marries, and Vaithi is arrested for his crimes, a vindication of love and integrity in the face of greed and manipulation. The film closes on a note of reconciliation and artistic triumph, where music, dance, and devotion triumph over the schemes that once threatened to pull them apart.
In this tale of passion and performance, the interplay between love, art, family pressures, and ambition creates a vivid tapestry of sound, color, and emotion. The world of Mohanambal and Sundaram is a testament to how art can illuminate truth, heal wounds, and bind two lives together despite the obstacles that arise from envy and longing.
