Substitute teacher Henry Barthes is brought in for a month-long assignment to teach English to high school students struggling academically. On his first day at school, he tasks the students with writing an essay reflecting on how they believe they will be remembered after their passing. This assignment reveals a deep well of emotional turmoil as he witnesses hostility in the classroom; one student even threatens him, while two others bully their classmate Meredith. Concerned, Henry begins to connect with Meredith after class, wanting to understand her better.

As the day progresses, Henry bears witness to more troubling behavior, such as an altercation involving the mother of a student who had been expelled for harassing the dedicated teacher Sarah Madison. This reflects the larger issues running rampant within the school environment. After school, Henry’s personal life weighs heavily on his mind as he visits his grandfather, who is suffering from dementia and is resistant to assistance from the care staff. Frustrated by the care his grandfather is receiving, Henry expresses his anger to a staff member.

On his bus ride home, he encounters a young sex worker named Erica, who is abused by a man who refuses to pay her. Despite her attempts to engage him in a sexual encounter, Henry refuses. The next day, as Henry reads the students’ essays aloud, one anonymous composition becomes particularly concerning to him, hinting at Meredith’s struggles with suicidal thoughts.

After another visit to his grandfather, Henry meets up with Erica and takes her to his apartment. There, he shows her kindness by feeding her and treating her injuries. Erica stays with Henry for several nights, although he gently reminds her that her stay cannot be indefinite. At the school, the staff engages in a memorial service for a deceased teacher, although many admit to not having liked him. During a faculty meeting, it is revealed that Principal Carol Dearden is soon to be fired due to the school’s low test scores affecting property values, igniting frustration among the overworked teachers.

When Sarah invites Henry to dinner, he experiences tension as Erica waits up for him, feeling abandoned. Yet, Henry sees the effort Erica puts into making dinner and appreciates her attempts to be responsible. Meanwhile, the school counselor Dr. Parker attempts to engage a student, Missy, about her low ambition and grades, ultimately leading to an emotional outpouring from Missy regarding her discontent with life.

Henry’s world becomes more chaotic when he is called to the care facility, where Erica reveals that his grandfather is gravely ill. His grandfather expresses fear about being a burden to Henry, causing Henry to reassure him that he is not at fault for their struggles. They discuss profound family traumas, including Henry’s mother’s tragic suicide by overdose and the implications of their family history.

Back at school, Meredith reveals her artistic expression to Henry, suggesting he might need someone to confide in—a statement that troubles Henry as he interprets it as a cry for help. Their interaction escalates when Meredith, in distress, seeks comfort from Henry, leading to a misunderstanding when Sarah walks in. Overwhelmed by the situation and haunted by memories of his family, Henry feels his past closing in on him.

Tragedy strikes soon after as he learns of his grandfather’s passing. Consumed by grief and a complex mix of emotions, Henry makes the painful decision to arrange for Erica to stay in a foster home, feeling he can no longer care for her. Erica pleads to remain with him, but he has to turn her away despite his reluctance.

The ripple effects of his decisions become painfully clear when Henry discovers that Meredith has succumbed to her struggles, committing suicide through poisoned cupcakes at a fundraiser she organized. Heartbroken, Henry decides to visit Erica in the foster care, where she joyously embraces him, reminding him of the fragility of human connection.

On his final teaching day, Henry reads Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher to his class, a poignant reflection of his tumultuous journey through personal loss, responsibility, and the quest for understanding in a world where kindness is often barricaded by pain.
