Strella (2009) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Strella (2009), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Yiorgos Mihalopoulos Yannis Kokiasmenos is released from prison after 14 years for a murder committed in his small Greek village. He spends his first night of freedom in a cheap Athens hotel, where he encounters Strella, a striking young woman who works as a prostitute and is known by that nickname among her friends. He then makes his way back to the village, hoping to reconnect with his son Leonidas, whom he has lost contact with. That night, Strella invites him to share a whiskey, and Yiorgos quickly suspects that Strella is a trans woman. Despite her initial resistance, the two become intimate, sharing a night of passion before dawn breaks.

Strella lives in a humble apartment and performs in drag at a club called The Dolls. After a fruitless search for Leonidas, Strella invites him to watch her perform and later lets him stay at her place, where they have sex again. He eventually moves out of the hotel after Strella offers him temporary shelter. His search continues to a modest place where he learns more about Strella’s world, and he attends one of her performances, drawn further into her orbit. He settles into a lover’s life with Strella, even as he begins to rethink his ties to his old home.

When Yiorgos returns to his village to sell his family home to Kouloukousis, a retired cop, he is told rumors swirl that Leonidas is not a policeman after all but a woman working as a prostibute in Athens. The whispers convince him that Strella might have been the woman he spotted all along, and he leaves town with a wary sense of his own past coming apart.

Back home, he confronts Strella about the truth of her past. Strella reveals a history that mirrors Yiorgos’ crime in a chilling way: as a nine-year-old girl, Strella fell in love with her 17-year-old maternal uncle, who coerced her into sexual acts. When Strella’s father arrived, he killed the uncle and injured Strella, and Strella was cared for by her grandmother until that grandmother’s death. Strella eventually left the village, a move that carries through to her present life.

Yiorgos then discloses a painful truth: he is Strella’s father, discovered in a moment of anger that incenses him at the thought of incest. The arrival of Alex, Strella’s gay best friend, adds tension to the scene. Alex’s mother had died from an overdose, and Alex had asked Strella for money and clothing. Yiorgos notices a bag Alex had lifted and pieces together that Strella had known all along that Yiorgos was his father and that their bond had grown from shared secrets into something more—a forbidden love.

Strela admits she had known all along how the release would unfold and had followed him, hoping to see him again. The revelation unsettles Yiorgos, driving him to a point of deciding whether to stay or to walk away. Strella pleads for him not to abandon her again, and he delays his departure, torn between old loyalties and a dangerous new attachment.

Strela visits Mary, an elderly, cancer-stricken trans woman who had helped raise Strella. Mary chastises Strella for pursuing a relationship with her own father, and she reveals that her own lover Anestis had been her uncle. Mary’s words linger as Strella and Yiorgos argue at her home, where Yiorgos accuses Strella of exploiting their shared trauma. Strella counters that she found a connection with him in the moment they met, even as he reminds her of the harm he caused in her past. The argument intensifies until Yiorgos slaps Strella and leaves, the violence underscoring the fragility of their bond.

Back at the family house, Yiorgos discovers photographs and toys that remind him of his and Strella’s younger days. Meanwhile, Strella discovers that Mary has died by suicide, having overdosed on morphine patches. Alex and Strella’s younger sibling come to stay with Strella, and Strella watches as Yiorgos, secretly following, reappears in her life.

A tentative reconciliation unfolds as Strella agrees to meet at a lucrative hotel, and Yiorgos confesses that he misses her and wants to repair what they shared. Strella admits she misses him too, but she leaves, her tears signaling the ache of their separation.

As New Year’s Eve approaches, the two reconcile in a bittersweet resolution. They choose to live together again, along with Alex and Alex’s sister, inviting an old cellmate and his friend to join in their small celebration. The night becomes a quiet affirmation of a fragile family formed from broken pieces, a testament to resilience as they welcome the new year together.
