In 1860s Paris, Thérèse Raquin Elizabeth Olsen is a beautiful, sexually repressed young woman trapped in a loveless marriage to her sickly cousin, Camille Tom Felton, whom she was compelled to wed by her domineering aunt, Madame Raquin Jessica Lange. She spends her days tucked behind the counter of a small shop and her evenings watching Madame Raquin host dominoes with an ever-changing circle of acquaintances. When she meets her husband’s alluring friend Laurent LeClaire Oscar Isaac, a dangerous attraction grows into an illicit affair that unsettles the quiet surface of their lives and sets off a chain of tragic events.

On a lake outing with Laurent and Therese, Camille is beaten to death by Laurent and subsequently drowns, an act that binds the lovers to a terrible secret. Madame Raquin grapples with the loss of her son and is eventually struck by a stroke, but she overhears Therese and Laurent discussing what they did. With effort, she alerts one of their friends, who informs the authorities, revealing the crime to the outside world.

To escape punishment, Laurent and Therese decide to end their lives as well. They share one final kiss after drinking poison mingled with champagne, and they die beside the river, their fates sealed in a moment of intimate tragedy before Madame Raquin.

Why they belong together: These movies are connected by their 'slow-burn' approach to crime narratives.
