Richard, an archaeologist, along with his wife Jules and their son Owen, resides on a secluded farm inherited from Richard's father. The isolation affects their family dynamic, which is further complicated by Owen's asthma and strange experiences.

Owen begins to hear mysterious whistling sounds from an entity named Jack Grey, causing concern for his mother, Jules. When she informs Richard about it, he rudely dismisses the idea and accuses Gordon, a family friend, of frightening their son with tales.

During a school field day, chaos erupts when a pony is violently attacked. Amidst the turmoil, Owen is found sitting alone with a bloody stick, heightening Richard's worries about Owen's mental state and the influence of Gordon.

Richard and Jules take Owen to a psychiatrist for an evaluation, hoping to uncover the cause of his distress. However, the tests yield no findings, leading them to continue searching for solutions and understanding.

While Richard is away, Owen has a severe asthma attack that Jules cannot foresee. In a panic, Jules rushes to call Gordon for help, only to find Owen unresponsive upon her return, leading to a frantic rush to the hospital.

Richard arrives at the hospital to find Jules collapsed from grief. The doctor delivers the devastating news that Owen has died from his asthma, plunging both parents into deep sorrow and despair.

Following Owen's death, Jules spirals into a debilitating depression, unable to engage with the world around her. Richard's efforts to help her are met with resistance as she remains bedridden, battling her inner turmoil.

In an attempt to lift Jules from her grief, Gordon brings a local psychic named Mrs. Forde to their home. Mrs. Forde conducts a cleansing ritual, attempting to bring peace to their household, and at that moment, a candle flickers mysteriously.

Amidst his personal struggles, Richard discovers his late father's journal, which discusses an entrance to the spirit world believed to be on their farm. Fascinated, Richard decides to begin an archaeological excavation based on his father's findings.

During the dig, Richard uncovers strange bones from a hare, which sparks his interest. However, an organic substance begins to inexplicably grow on the bones, raising Richard's concerns and prompting a visit to the college for answers.

To Richard's astonishment, the organic matter on the bones transforms, regenerating into a living hare. This bizarre occurrence entwines Jules’ emotions as she grows attached to the creature, naming it Jack Grey, coincidentally the same name Owen mentioned.

As the situation escalates, Jules becomes more protective of Jack Grey, even resorting to violence when a colleague threatens their newfound 'child'. In a shocking act of desperation, she stabs the colleague, cementing her bond with the hare.

Jules confesses a horrifying truth to Richard; she had an instinct that Owen's life was at risk and chose to let him die. This twisted justification leads to escalating tension, culminating in violent actions that tear their family apart.

Amidst the chaos of betrayal and death, Richard and Jules form an unhealthy bond over Jack Grey. They create a nursery for the hare in Owen's former room, symbolizing their attempt to replace their lost child with this unnatural creation.
