Aspiring actor Sam and his girlfriend, Rylie, who is a botanist, embark on a journey to rural New England to investigate a mysterious outbreak of a bizarre fungus known as “sordico,” which has been wreaking havoc on local farms. Their adventure takes a turn for the worse when their car breaks down, compelling them to set up camp on a secluded farm. However, they are soon confronted by the elderly farmer, Eulis, who claims ownership of the land and insists they leave.
When the couple heads back to their car, they discover they have a dead battery, stranding them further in this desolate area. They seek assistance at a nearby farmhouse, where they encounter the eccentric Karen and her son Gunni, who appears to be mute, partly catatonic, and fixated on watching vintage cartoons while bandaged around his head. Karen attribute Gunni’s peculiar state to an incident involving a bull that kicked him.
While waiting for the mechanic [Pete], whom Karen claims to have called, they find themselves in increasingly unsettling situations. As Sam and Rylie try to adhere to their vegan diet, they are served bizarre meals by Karen, whose eccentricities surface during odd conversations. Rylie becomes intrigued as she questions the strange Polaroids of Karen’s family lining the walls.
As time passes and Pete fails to arrive, Karen offers the couple some makeshift sleeping arrangements in her home’s cellar. Unbeknownst to Rylie, who remains in the kitchen indulging in Karen’s food, Sam succumbs to temptation, leaving her alone momentarily. Gunni experiences a seizure, seemingly attempting to communicate a warning to Sam, who soon after collapses and dreams of an animated world influenced by Popeye characters discussing a medical ailment.
When Sam awakens, he finds Rylie missing and the house silent. He frantically calls 911 and ventures into the barn in search of answers but is soon ambushed by Karen, who injects him with a sedative, leaving him unconscious yet again.
Eventually, Sam and Rylie awaken in a chilling predicament — restrained on a platform and fitted with breathing masks connected to gas tanks while suffering injuries, including a bleeding wound on Sam. Below them, Karen, Eulis, and Gunni are engaged in a meal at a picnic table, hinting at the darkness that has overtaken them, brought on by the sordico fungus and a warped interpretation of divine will.
Karen elaborates that she and Eulis resorted to cannibalism in response to their terrible crop yields, justifying their horrific actions by suggesting they “adopt” unwilling victims. The grotesque reality is further revealed when Gunni, whose real backstory indicates he was lobotomized, and their “daughter,” a dismembered woman named Delilah, join the macabre family meal.
The tension escalates when Eulis prepares to lobotomize Sam, but their sinister plans are interrupted by a cop. In this brief moment of distraction, Sam convinces Gunni to help him and Rylie evade their captors. Unfortunately, their escape plan crumbles when Gunni accidentally activates an animal trap, leading to his demise and the couple’s recapture.
The chilling cycle continues as we see Rylie in Gunni’s previous spot at the dining table, now lobotomized, with bandages on her face where her cheeks have been removed, and disturbingly, she is pregnant. Meanwhile, Sam’s fate is sealed as he has been transformed into a semi-sentient being, akin to Delilah, forced into a life of horror. The horrifying endings are marked by Karen compelling Sam and Delilah to engage in a grotesque union, further solidifying the nightmarish existence they are trapped in.
