Carey and Ashley are driving on the highway when they witness a crash involving another couple. They pull over to help, finding the husband barely conscious and the wife ejected from her seat. The wife is pronounced dead after Ashley's attempt at CPR.

Shaken by the accident, Ashley tells Carey that she wants a divorce and has been unfaithful. The confession shatters their marriage and leaves Carey reeling from the loss and betrayal.

An upset Carey flees to his best friend Paul and Julie's beach house for comfort. There, Paul and Julie reveal that they are in an open relationship, which shocks Carey.

The next day, a man accuses Paul and Julie's son Russ of stealing his jet ski. With Paul away, Carey defends Julie, and the confrontation escalates until Julie intervenes by striking the accuser.

That night, Carey and Julie spend time together and eventually have sex. The clandestine encounter deepens Carey's attachment to Julie and begins to blur the lines of their relationships.

Paul returns the next day and Carey recounts the previous night. Paul becomes furious, leading to a violent argument in the house. Julie and Russ return, and Julie forces both men to apologize.

Carey later joins Julie and Russ at a carnival, but his jealousy grows when he sees Brent flirting with Julie. Julie confronts Carey, who admits that the sexual encounter meant more to him than he expected.

Carey returns home to find Ashley sleeping with another man. She tries to persuade him to leave, but Carey suggests entering an open relationship to avoid divorce. He reveals he has already slept with another woman, though he does not say who.

Ashley begins a string of short-term lovers, and Carey casually befriends them, even inviting them to live in the house. This arrangement irritates Ashley and strains their living situation.

Now separated from Julie, Paul arrives at Carey and Ashley's apartment to confront him. Ashley discovers that the 'other woman' was Julie, fueling further tension among all four.

Julie encounters Carey at Russ's school and tells him that Paul's company is bankrupt. She also admits she never slept with anyone else during their relationship with Paul. Carey reveals his growing feelings for Julie, and Paul witnesses their kiss, pressuring Carey to admit they are seeing each other.

Following the disciplinary meeting, Julie angrily confronts Paul about loans taken in Russ's name. Paul is indicted and jailed, and after being released he agrees to sign divorce papers for Julie.

At Russ's birthday party, Ashley arrives with her lover Matt, while Paul brings a woman resembling Julie to provoke her. Ashley attempts to win Carey back, and Carey admits he was jealous of Ashley's lovers but chooses to remain friends. Later that night, Paul confesses he never slept with anyone else and suggests an open relationship.

Paul and Julie reconcile and have sex, which Carey walks in on. The four of them argue about their situation, nearly escalating into a fight before they extinguish a fire caused by Russ's birthday candles.

Carey and Ashley are back together and have a baby. Paul and Julie remain separated but maintain a sexual relationship. At a beach house now used as an Airbnb, Carey and Paul get into a fight with a neighbor who accuses Russ of stealing his jet ski.
