As the film opens, we are introduced to Tommy Reilly, a once-promising writer who has regrettably settled into the role of a producer for a weekly entertainment news program. This decision stems more from economic necessity than from a passion for storytelling. His personal life is spiraling; he has recently been dumped by his live-in girlfriend without a moment’s notice. To escape his troubles, he moves in with his friend Carpo, an aging ladies’ man who generously dispenses dubious romantic advice, hoping to navigate life’s complications.

While browsing a local video store, Tommy encounters Maria Tedesko, a grammar school teacher reeling from her recent divorce, and understandably cautious about jumping into a new relationship. Their chemistry is palpable, but Maria’s reluctance causes her to withdraw from Tommy, ultimately leading to a surprising twist: she later reveals she is pregnant with Tommy’s child but decides against involving him in her decision to raise the child alone.

Maria’s situation is complicated further by her ex-husband, Benjamin Bazler, who works as a doorman in a Manhattan apartment building and harbors dreams of becoming a professional musician, reminiscing about the great rock music of the ’60s and ’70s. He confides in Ashley, a coffee shop waitress from Iowa attending NYU, about his aspirations, unaware that she is entangled in a tumultuous affair with Griffin Ritso, a married dentist who professes his love for her but is paralyzed by the thought of leaving his wife, Annie Matthews.

As the narrative progresses, tensions in their relationships escalate. Ashley ultimately decides to end things with Griffin, only to seek comfort in a budding romance with Benjamin. Meanwhile, Annie, feeling imprisoned in her marriage, finds solace in her conversations with Tommy, where they bond over mutual dissatisfaction in their romantic lives. This connection grows deeper and ultimately influences her decision to leave Griffin.
