During World War II, Army lieutenant Danny Ferguson and his fiancée Maggie Preston face the challenge of finding suitable housing amidst wartime shortages. They must delay their wedding until a room becomes available at the Craig Hotel, which hosts married officers and their wives nearby at Camp Fielding. When their accommodations are finally ready, Maggie arrives with her wealthy parents, Henry and Vera Preston, played by Eugene Pallette and Mary Nash. Her parents are visibly upset about the modest living conditions their daughter will have to endure, reflecting their privileged background. Maggie, initially overwhelmed by her new circumstances, is buoyant and optimistic but begins to feel disillusioned after her husband Danny leaves for duty on the base, leaving her alone during the day.

Maggie struggles to adapt to her role as an army wife and encounters social difficulties, quickly feeling like an outsider among the other women at the hotel. Her lack of domestic skills also hampers her ability to contribute to daily routines, which only heightens her frustration. Her mood becomes more tense, leading her to lash out at the hotel manager, Mrs. Jerry Armstrong, portrayed by Jane Randolph. Her perspective begins to soften when she learns that Jerry’s husband was killed overseas and that she remains at the hotel as a way of honoring his memory. This revelation helps Maggie develop a more sympathetic understanding of her situation.

As her attitude shifts, Maggie starts to forge friendships, especially with Shirley, a fellow wife played by Gale Robbins, who is married to Lt. Red Pianatowski. Stanley Prager portrays Red, who is Danny’s best friend, adding dimension to the camaraderie among the wives and servicemen. However, tensions surface when Danny faces jeers and snide remarks from other officers, discovering that Maggie had previously asked her father to influence her husband’s assignment, so he stays in the United States instead of being sent overseas. Angered by her perceived interference, Danny storms out of their room, and Maggie, feeling misunderstood and hurt, considers returning to her parents’ home in Philadelphia.

The relationship reaches a turning point when Danny returns home with Philip, the hotel manager, and they find a book about infant care that Maggie had bought, leading Danny to assume she is pregnant. Rushing to catch a train, Danny pleads with her to stay, worried about their future. During a dinner honoring a visiting general, Red tells Shirley that Maggie is expecting a child. As Maggie attempts to explain the truth, Danny receives the news that his company will soon ship overseas. Though initially disappointed that he won’t become a father yet, Maggie reassures him with her promise to start a family upon his return.

With the war escalating, Danny and Red depart for overseas duty, leaving Maggie and Shirley inspired to contribute to the war effort by finding jobs in the defense industry. Determined to support their husbands and the troops, they resolve to make a difference on the home front. This heartfelt story explores themes of love, sacrifice, and the resilience of women and families during a tumultuous time, highlighting their strength and hope amid uncertainty and change.
