Someone’s Watching Me!

Leigh Michaels relocates from New York City to Los Angeles to take a live television directing position and rents a spacious downtown apartment. She quickly befriends Sophie, a fellow director, and encounters aggressive attention from Steve, another director. On her first day at work she also receives an anonymous phone call that hints at danger to come.

On her first day on the job Leigh answers an anonymous call from an unknown man. When she returns to her apartment she finds the door unlocked, and assumes a maintenance worker forgot to secure it. Unbeknownst to her, a stalker in the building across has infiltrated her apartment complex and placed recording devices to monitor her.

Leigh receives a letter from Excursions Unlimited informing her she has won a free vacation to Europe. At a bar she meets Paul Winkless, a philosophy professor, and feels an attraction. This encounter occurs amid the creeping threat she faces from the anonymous stalker.

Leigh begins receiving gifts in the mail, including a telescope and a swimsuit, all from an anonymous source. Around the same time, strange phenomena occur in her apartment, such as lights dimming on their own and muffled phone calls. The sense of being watched intensifies as the Europe trip reward lingers in the back of her mind.

A letter from Excursions Unlimited leads Leigh to trail the sender into the building's basement laundry. She drops a knife into a large floor drain, then retrieves it and hides when she hears footsteps. From below, she watches as a man stands over the grate, prompting her to slip away when he leaves.

Leigh realizes the stalker lives in the building across from hers. She, Sophie, and Paul set up a stakeout in Leigh's apartment and use a telescope to try to identify the stalker in the opposite building. A police visit with Gary Hunt reveals that the man has not yet committed a crime, offering limited progress.

The stalker phones Leigh again, prompting her to look through the telescope. The police arrest the man for harassment, but he denies involvement and leaves California for Iowa, leaving Leigh shaken and frustrated.

A new letter arrives and a different man is spotted spying from a balcony. Leigh realizes the previous suspect was not the real stalker, and the case escalates as she tries to identify the true threat. The wrong man has already been arrested and left the city.

With a walkie-talkie and a knife, Leigh heads to confront the stalker while Sophie watches from Leigh's apartment. When Leigh enters the stalker's space, she discovers Sophie has been attacked in her own unit and has vanished. The police later note that Sophie had a flight to Fort Worth that night, leaving Leigh's search area uncertain.

Leigh uncovers a hidden microphone the stalker used to monitor her. Paul and Leigh learn that the apartment inspector, Herbert Stiles, oversees multiple buildings and may be involved. The web of surveillance begins to point toward a broader scheme than a single stalker.

Leigh tracks down Stiles' address and breaks into his house. Inside she finds numerous microphones and other devices confirming he has been bugging her across the city. The evidence tightens the case against Stiles as the suspected mastermind.

Returning to her apartment, Leigh finds a typewritten suicide note signed with her name on the coffee table, a chilling ruse. In the darkness that follows, Stiles attacks Leigh, attempting to throw her off the balcony, but she fights back and stabs him with a shard of glass, sending him to his death.
