Troubled teenager Kale Brecht (Shia LaBeouf](/actor/shia-labeouf)) finds himself in a precarious situation after a heated confrontation with his Spanish teacher, Senor Gutierrez (Rene Rivera), leads to a punch thrown in anger over a sensitive topic—his father’s recent passing. The sympathetic judge, Judge (Charles Carroll), consequently sentences him to three months of house arrest, where he’s tethered to an ankle monitor that restricts him to a 100-foot radius of the sensor set up inside his home.

Kale is haunted by the memory of his father, Danny (Matt Craven), whose life was cut short in a tragic car accident—a moment that forever changed Kale’s life. Feeling responsible for the incident, he struggles with guilt and longing as he recalls their shared moments fishing. His mother, Julie (Carrie-Anne Moss), is left to pick up the pieces, working diligently as a real estate agent while trying to keep Kale’s spirits up during his forced confinement.

With his routines disrupted and feeling utterly bored, Kale turns to spying on his neighbors, particularly his beautiful new neighbor, Ashley Carlson (Sarah Roemer). He also becomes increasingly curious about the reclusive Robert Turner (David Morse), who piques his suspicion when he fits the profile of a suspected serial killer. This tension prompts Kale and his best friend, Ronnie (Aaron Yoo), to investigate.

One fateful night, after several odd encounters and escalating tensions with Ashley, Kale’s suspicions about Turner deepen when he starts to piece together grisly clues. Though Ashley initially helps him, she eventually becomes frightened by Turner, prompting her to retreat from the investigation. The stakes rise dramatically as Kale’s curiosity leads to dangerous situations.

“You’re going to regret this,” Turner ominously warns Kale, heightening the sense of danger encroaching on their peaceful suburban lives.

As the plot unfolds, Kale’s efforts to protect his loved ones become increasingly desperate, especially when Turner seems to have menacing intentions for both Kale and Julie. With thrilling twists and heart-pounding moments, they launch a plan to confront Turner. In a harrowing climax, Ashly comes to Kale’s aid just in time to turn the tide against their would-be captor.

His ankle monitor is removed, signaling a fresh start as he navigates life—and a budding romance with Ashley—after surviving the harrowing ordeal. Kale finally managed to turn the tables on the local pranksters as well, reclaiming his agency and stepping into a brighter future, leaving behind the shadows of the past and focusing on what lies ahead with newfound hope.
