Sandra, a ten-year-old girl with distinctly African features, finds herself at the center of a complex situation that challenges her identity and “place” in society. Her parents, Abraham and Sannie, who are white Afrikaners, are unaware of Sandra’s black ancestry. They have raised her with love and care as their white daughter in a remote part of Eastern Transvaal, believing they are doing what is best for her. Despite her appearance, Sandra’s upbringing is based on her parents’ love, and she navigates her childhood as a regular child in their close-knit community.
However, the social norms and laws of the time begin to cast doubt on her status. Sandra is sent to a boarding school in the nearby town of Piet Retief, where her brother Leon also studies. Despite her inclusion, she faces discrimination and rejection from teachers and officials who claim that she does not belong there. This leads to her being subjected to government scrutiny, where she undergoes an examination. The authorities classify her as Coloured, a decision that results in her expulsion from the school. Her parents are taken aback by this label, but Abraham aggressively challenges the ruling in court, fighting to have Sandra’s classification overturned. The case gains international attention and sparks media frenzy, eventually leading to changes in the law that officially recognize Sandra as White once again.
As Sandra grows older, she becomes acutely aware of the societal rejection from the white community, despite her legal reclassification. By the age of 17, she falls in love with Petrus, a local vegetable seller who is Black. Their forbidden love blossoms into an illicit relationship, which stirs a storm of conflict within her family and community. Abraham, her father, reacts fiercely, threatening to shoot Petrus and disown Sandra if she continues the relationship. Meanwhile, Sannie is caught in a difficult position, torn between her husband’s anger and her daughter’s feelings.
Ultimately, Sandra chooses love over societal expectations and elopes with Petrus to Swaziland. Abraham, out of rage and concern, reports her to the police, leading to her and Petrus’s arrest and imprisonment. Despite being advised by the magistrate to return home, Sandra refuses to go back to her previous life, determined to live on her own terms.
From that point onwards, Sandra must start anew, living as a Black woman with limited resources—no running water, no sanitation, and scant income. She and Petrus build a life together, raising two children. Although she begins to feel a sense of belonging within her new community, she is haunted by the longing for her parents and the hope of reuniting with them someday.
Years of hardship and struggle stretch ahead, making the possibility of reconciliation seem distant. Yet, Sandra carries her father’s words of encouragement with her at all times: “Never give up!” Her story, detailed in Skin, is ultimately a profound tale of family, forgiveness, and the unbreakable strength of the human spirit amidst immense societal and personal adversity.
