Lalita and Ravi fall in love during a college function where Lalita forgets the lyrics to a famous song, and Professor Vijay Choudhury completes the music. Vijay explains that the song is very famous and his wife's favorite. Lalita explains she learned the song from her mother, establishing a link between generations.

A flashback shows Vijay and Laxmi as a loving and successful singing duo with Kumar. Misunderstandings arise and Vijay forces Laxmi to leave their home. The confusion is cleared when he learns Kumar is marrying, but Laxmi is nowhere to be traced.

Laxmi learns about Lalita and Ravi and Dharamdas helps arrange their marriage on the condition of good exam results. Lalita asks Vijay to tutor her at home. During a home visit, Vijay sees Laxmi in a widow outfit, is shocked, and resigns; Lalita informs Laxmi about his reaction, and Laxmi explains her new avatar.

In a Pune flashback, Laxmi saves Lalita from an accident and Prem Kapoor thanks her. Prem explains Sunita is dead and asks Laxmi to stay for Lalita's birthday to act as her mother. To shield Lalita from the truth, Laxmi adopts a widow's appearance when Shera abducts Lalita on her birthday.

Prem rushes to save Lalita but is stabbed by Shera and dies. Shera is imprisoned after the attempt. On Prem's last request, Laxmi is to raise Lalita as her own daughter and spare her the shock of knowing her mother's death.

Back in the present, Vijay apologizes to Laxmi for misunderstanding her twice and decides not to resign. He resumes teaching Lalita and Ravi at Lalita's home, rekindling the possibility of family ties.

Shera is back from jail and begins tracking Prem's family. Ravi informs Lalita about an alleged affair between her mother and Professor Vijay, which Lalita does not believe, leading to a breakup. Ravi confronts Vijay and warns him to leave the city, while Shera exploits the tension to attack Vijay.

Laxmi visits Vijay and learns of his distress, while Lalita is shocked to see her mother embracing Vijay. Lalita attempts suicide but is saved by Ravi. She decides to leave home with her father's photograph, and Laxmi tries to stop her but she leaves.

Vijay seeks Advocate Dharamdas and narrates the full story to try to reconcile the family. Dharamdas calms Ravi and explains the backstory to help him accept Laxmi. The stage is set for a possible reunion.

Shera kidnaps Lalita again and demands the same ransom as before. Laxmi agrees to the ransom and goes to Shera to deliver it.

A fierce confrontation unfolds; Lalita is targeted and Laxmi sacrifices herself by taking the bullet while Vijay holds her. Laxmi's mangalsutra falls, symbolizing the strain on family bonds. The police arrive and order is restored as the danger ends.

Advocate Dharamdas recounts Laxmi's true story to Lalita, helping her understand and forgive. Lalita forgives Laxmi and reconciles with her mother. The family reunites and the film ends on a note of forgiveness.
