Monty James is a beloved mechanic in Edgewood, Atlanta, who works for Willie and dreams of one day owning his own shop. He provides steady support for his three daughters—Sierra, Lauryn, and China—who live with their maternal grandmother, Kat, and keep in touch with Monty through regular visits and financial help. Kat, sensing the danger of their unstable family dynamic, asks Monty to take custody of the girls, especially as Kat’s daughter Jennifer, Monty’s ex-wife, shows little genuine interest in her children and sides with her drug-dealing partner Joe.

Back in court, Julia argues that it would be in the children’s best interests for Monty to win custody and presents a written statement from Kat. Jennifer’s lawyer counters by accusing Monty of a previous conviction for statutory rape, which undermines his suitability in the eyes of the court. Feeling betrayed, Julia steps away from the case for a moment, leaving Monty to face the tough crossfire.

The situation worsens when Monty’s daughters reveal that Joe has been beating them.
