Miles Raymond, a middle school English teacher in San Diego, grapples with depression and a stalled writing career. His love for wine serves as both a passion and an escape from his everyday life.

As his friend Jack prepares for marriage, Miles agrees to join him on a road trip to the scenic Santa Ynez Valley wine country. While Miles looks for a retreat from his troubles, Jack seeks one last adventure before tying the knot.

During their trip, the duo meets Maya, a waitress at Miles's favorite restaurant, The Hitching Post. Subsequently, they decide to arrange a double date with Maya and her friend Stephanie without revealing Jack's engagement.

The double date unfolds, with Jack romantically involved with Stephanie while Miles connects with Maya. However, tensions rise as truth about Jack’s engagement starts to loom over their evening.

Miles mistakenly reveals Jack's engagement to Maya during a moment of honesty. Hurt and feeling betrayed, Maya ends her budding relationship with Miles and informs Stephanie about the truth.

Jack's impulsive behavior leads him to an embarrassing situation when he has a fling with a waitress named Cammi. An unexpected return of her husband forces Jack to make a hasty and undignified escape.

To hide the truth about Jack's injuries, Miles concocts a story and crashes his own car into a ditch, claiming it was an accident. This desperate attempt to protect Jack's reputation illustrates the lengths he is willing to go for friendship.

At Jack's wedding, Miles faces his ex-wife Vicki, discovering she has moved on and is expecting a child with another partner. This encounter emphasizes Miles's deep feelings of loss and isolation as he comes to terms with his past.

After the wedding, Miles finds himself sitting alone in a fast-food joint, drinking his beloved 1961 Château Cheval Blanc from a disposable cup. This moment encapsulates the deep sadness and longing he feels in that pivotal phase of his life.
