She Dies Tomorrow

Amy, a young woman with a newly acquired home, receives a congratulatory phone call from her friend Jane. However, Amy’s demeanor feels distant, leaving Jane puzzled as she explains she can’t visit due to her sister-in-law’s birthday party but will swing by regardless. While Jane is en route, Amy engages in a strange online search, first looking for urns and then switching to leather jackets. Once Jane arrives, the atmosphere shifts dramatically as Amy ominously reveals her belief that she will die the following day. Jane initially dismisses this as a symptom of Amy’s past struggles with alcoholism, but Amy insists she wishes to be transformed into a leather jacket after her death, desiring to be of use even posthumously. As Jane departs, she assures Amy she’ll check in the next day.

Later that evening, Jane, feeling increasingly paranoid and unable to reach Amy despite leaving several voice messages, impulsively decides to head to the birthday party. Arriving looking disheveled and in her pajamas, she stirs confusion among the guests as she announces her own impending demise, a statement that visibly disturbs her sister-in-law, Susan. Jason, Jane’s brother, attempts to ease the mounting tension. Meanwhile, at the party, guests Tilly and Brian quietly discuss Jane’s condition, with Brian suggesting that the dread surrounding death is spreading like an infection.

As the fear of mortality permeates the atmosphere, Jason and Susan find themselves caught in the same web of anxiety. The story takes a darker turn at the hospital when Brian, overwhelmed by the circumstances, makes a chilling decision to take his father’s life support offline, revealing Tilly’s ulterior motive of waiting for the inevitable end to end their relationship. Seeking comfort, Jane consults a doctor, who suggests she may benefit from speaking to a psychologist.

In a parallel narrative, Amy takes a thrilling ride in a dune buggy, reminiscing about a past weekend spent with her boyfriend Craig at his brother’s vacation home, during which the effects of fear and anxiety begin to manifest during a seemingly routine pizza delivery. After their adventure, Amy unintentionally passes her fear to the dune buggy driver, leading to a brief, awkward romantic encounter that ends prematurely.

Back at the doctor’s office, Jane inadvertently imparts her dread to the doctor, prompting him to depart in distress. Back at home, she seeks solace in observing bacteria through a microscope, wrestling with her thoughts until she hears a noise, asking herself, > “is this how it ends?”

As the story progresses, Amy faces a heartbreaking revelation when she returns to the vacation home to discover the tragic fate of Craig, who has ended his own life. The next morning, Jason and Susan solemnly contemplate what they believe to be their last day, deciding to let their daughter rest peacefully and avoid waking her. Meanwhile, Jane unpredictable ventures into the residence of two composed young women, Sky and Erin, who seem unperturbed by her blood-stained appearance. In a surreal moment, Jane asks to swim in their pool, unaware of the sinister implications as her blood begins to mingle disturbingly with the water.

Subsequently, Amy visits a leather store and engages the employee in a conversation about custom work, inquiring about the possibilities for “a mammal.” As the employee describes the process, tears well up in Amy’s eyes, and she jolts awake, finding herself lying on a bed of rocks, whispering to herself, teetering between reassurances of “it’s okay” and despairing declarations of “I’m not okay,” while softly humming to regain her composure.
