It all starts in 1983, where we meet Nick Styles (Denzel Washington), a reserved rookie with the Los Angeles Police Department, who is also navigating the complexities of law school. This period marks the emergence of Nick’s career, as he encounters his future wife, Alice (Victoria Dillard), while simultaneously drifting apart from his childhood friend, Odessa (Ice-T), who is veering down a dark path into crime in South Central Los Angeles.
During a routine patrol with his partner, Larry Doyle (Kevin Pollak), at a street fair, Nick’s life takes a sudden turn when he crosses paths with Earl Talbot Blake (John Lithgow). Blake, a hitman, commits a brutal double cross, eliminating four drug dealers in cold blood. As chaos erupts, Nick and Larry step in, cornering Blake and his accomplice Kim (Josh Evans). In a tense standoff, Nick manages to subdue Blake, cleverly using a backup gun hidden for such emergencies, ultimately shooting him in the knee.
This altercation is caught on tape by a passerby, thrusting Nick into the spotlight as a local hero, much to the delight of Priscilla Brimleigh (Lindsay Wagner) from the District Attorney’s office and U.B. Farris (John Cothran Jr.). Following the incident, Nick and Larry are elevated to the rank of Detective, while Blake languishes in prison, seething with a vow for revenge against Nick.
Fast-forward some years, Nick has ascended to fame and fortune as an Assistant District Attorney. He is now happily married to Alice and the proud father of two daughters, Lisa and Monica. His high-profile media persona is juxtaposed with his political ambitions, commencing with fundraising efforts for a new children’s community center at the renowned Watts Towers.
However, Blake is still very much a presence in Nick’s life, nursing a deep-seated grudge while incarcerated. In prison, he becomes embroiled in violent altercations, eventually collaborating with the Aryan Brotherhood to scheme an escape. After a bloody breakout, Blake manages to fake his death with the help of Kim, who switches dental records, ensuring his nefarious plan remains concealed.
As Nick prepares a telethon to support his community initiative, Blake subtly returns to Los Angeles, plotting Nick’s downfall. Leveraging deception, Blake stages the murder of Councilman Farris to implicate Nick in a scandal, further ruining Nick’s reputation and dragging him into a media storm of underage pornography accusations.
In a harrowing series of events, Blake intricately orchestrates Nick’s life to plunge into chaos, capturing him at his most vulnerable. Tied down in his own home and drugged for several days—while Blake records his humiliation—Nick finds himself abandoned by those he once thought trusted him. After narrowly escaping a performance at his daughters’ play, despair looms as Nick races to protect them.
As the shocking truth reveals itself, Nick finds himself accused of crimes, pushing him to seek the aid of Odessa, who has turned into a drug dealer but holds a connection to Nick’s past. Together they stage a plan to draw Blake out into the open.
Their showdown culminates at the Watts Towers, where amidst a media frenzy, Nick confronts Blake in a fierce battle. The intensity mounts as they fight atop the towering structures, and ultimately, with the assistance of Odessa’s crew, Nick turns the tables on Blake. A shocking climax ensues, leading to Blake’s demise.
Nick’s innocence is restored, allowing him to reunite with Alice and their daughters. The story closes with Nick addressing the media, silencing the cameras and reclaiming his narrative, reminding us of the fragility of truth in a world where perception can swiftly become reality.
